Five Old & Rare Black Market Picks

What is the Vinomofo Black Market?

Black Market deals give you exceptional value, only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site.

Wines that are bona-fide, 100% the genuine article. You just don't know who made them until they turn up.

But we can tell you a few things. Important stuff like what they taste like, when they were made and what from. And also what they've been scored by critics too.

Here's five old & rare selects, fine aged & museum release wines at the peak of their drinking window. The hard yards have been done - now it's just a case of enjoying them.

This is a mammoth producer on the Aussie wine scene. Their wines are not only among the best of the region, but the best of the continent. Any discussion about Australia's leading wineries that doesn't include this producer is, by default, incomplete. And what are they famous for? This. Deeply ageable, single-vineyard red wines that drink like a dream for 25 years plus after harvest.

Beautifully blue fruited despite the not-insignificant time in cellar. It has such richness and deep, brooding, plummy weight. A distinctly impressive wine that is in perfect shape – I suspect we may have intersected it at the height of its drinking window, though it will surely stay there for some time. Beyond the dense fruit profile there's notes of char, spice, bristly acid, wet earth, umami, terracotta, cedar and pine – entirely too much going on to capture in one thought. Buy it now, but be sure to save a bottle for when the rellos come by for Christmas lunch (or for when they leave, depending on how much you like your rellos).

A 100 point, collectors essential.

You'll remember your first bottle of this forever.

Breathtaking. All you have to do is say the name of this producer and every Somm, Dick and Harry within earshot will start salivating. This wine's weighty reputation precedes it, but does it live up to the hype? Is the pope catholic? An absolute pleasure to drink. No notes.

Wines like this don’t come around very often. This producer is arguably New Zealand's best and most well-known winery, a reputation like that has got to be earned. Like many a Hawke’s Bay producer, they make wines in the spirit of Bordeaux. This is their top-of-the-range, Right Bank-inspired red blend. It’s a stunner upon release each vintage, but add in ten years of ageing in the winery’s cellar, and you’ve got something epic. The fruit still jumps out of the glass, primarily sweet plum and blackberry. Layered into that are the secondary characteristics that only careful cellaring can bring forth. You’ll find tea leaf, olive tapenade, liquorice, and a smattering of dried herbs. The finish is lengthy with cleansing acid and chalky tannins. We’ll never see this specific vintage again at the ‘Fo (and maybe not any other vintage of this wine), so best to get in while we still have stock.

Concentration, spice, and all things nice. Perfumed red cherries and plums, with smooth chocolatey notes and a gorgeously rich texture. Pure McLaren Vale magic. A decent stint in the cellar leaves us with a deeply smooth wine with complexity and flavour coming out its ears.

Year in, year out, this wine knocks our socks off, but we've been impatiently waiting for this. The back vintage! Finally, the very same one we've loved, all this time, AGED and ready to rock and roll! It could be McLaren Vale etching it's way further and further into our hearts. It could be the fastidious and integrated use of oak barrels. It could be because we flat out just love shiraz. Or, we could love it because you folks love it. Whatever it is, it steals our heart every time, and we're proud to be able to present it to you at such phenomenal value.

'That' Coonawarra cabernet - You know the one... We’ve now seen many a ripper vintage of this baby. It’s one deal that flies out the door and into your kitchen. For those in the know, you’re never disappointed once you pull the cork.

A cellar release with a lucky 9 years of evolution - give it a burl, and you’ll see that it is only starting to touch its prime drinking window. Usually exclusive to the wine producer’s database, this trickles out to us only when we are lucky, somehow our charming wine buyers have managed to get on that lucky list.

Boisterous tannins that have mellowed to a brooding, silky palate, with chunky fruit joined by herbaceous and somewhat meaty notes. There’s still classic cabernet cassis and blackberry, which is accompanied by rosemary, thyme and a long and savoury finish. Be quick, mofo - you too should be so lucky!

Exquisitely aged, Margaret River magnificence.

This isn't one to sleep on.

This cool climate masterpiece was spared no expense in its creation. Handpicked fruit was carefully selected and matured in 50% new french oak to provide a framework of fine grained tannins that build towards a structured finish that lingers long after the final sip.

Elegant aromatics of cherry and blackberry sit alongside lifted floral notes that continue to entice. For its age, this shiraz still surprises with a youth and exuberance that drives towards a mature palate of coffee grind, cacao and cigar box. The fruit still holds its own and veers towards heady and plump stewed plums and dark cherry. Certainly deserving of every one of its 95 Halliday points.
