When Halliday gave this 95-points in 2014, he said not to touch it 'til the 2020s. Roger that, James!

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

A perfectly aged, Halliday approved shiraz from a Victorian icon - it's hard to justify even writing this tasting note, as it'll all be sold out by them time anyone gets a chance to read it. In any case, the wine: blueberries and plums over vanilla, eucalypt, and sweet spice. Liquorice and fruit compote follow neatly, deftly behind the initial fruit burst. Among many things, this wine is further proof of the superiority of the Stelvin closure as opposed to cork for ageing cool climate reds. The fruit is remarkably fresh, but no aged characteristics like leather, wet earth and game have been sacrificed whatsoever. The density of the fruit is framed by maturity without being swamped by it, and the wine is able to hold its form through a lasting finish. This is truly a deal to jump at, and one you won't see again.

What is a Black Market deal?

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.

Frequently Asked Questions

The wine's exceptional preservation is largely due to its Stelvin (screw cap) closure, which prevents cork taint and oxidation while allowing controlled micro-oxygenation. Cool climate Pyrenees Shiraz naturally has higher acidity and tannin structure that supports long-term ageing. The combination of proper closure technology and the wine's inherent structure has maintained remarkable fruit freshness while developing complex secondary characteristics like leather, wet earth and game notes.

The Pyrenees region in Victoria sits at higher altitude with cooler temperatures than traditional warm-climate Shiraz regions like Barossa Valley. This creates wines with more restrained alcohol, brighter acidity, and elegant spice characteristics rather than jammy fruit. The granitic soils and continental climate produce Shiraz with distinctive eucalyptus notes and fine tannin structure, resulting in wines that age gracefully and maintain freshness over decades.

Serve at cellar temperature (16-18°C) in large Burgundy-style glasses to allow the complex aromatics to develop fully. Decant for 30-60 minutes to soften the tannins and integrate the mature characteristics with the vibrant fruit. The wine's density and 95-point rating suggest it will pair beautifully with rich dishes like braised lamb, aged beef, or strong cheeses that can match its intensity and complexity.

The blueberry notes indicate cool-climate Shiraz character, where lower temperatures preserve fresh fruit aromatics rather than creating jammy, cooked fruit flavours. Liquorice is a classic marker of quality Shiraz, developing from the interaction between grape tannins and oak during maturation. Combined with the vanilla and sweet spice, these flavours suggest traditional winemaking with French oak influence, creating a wine that balances power with elegance typical of premium Victorian Shiraz.

This wine is drinking beautifully now, having reached perfect maturity where primary fruit and secondary aged characteristics are in harmony. The description notes that aged elements like leather and wet earth are present without overwhelming the fresh fruit density. While it could potentially age further, the 'Black Market Deal' nature suggests this is peak drinking time - the wine has achieved the perfect balance that makes it worthy of its 95-point Halliday rating.
