Why do we love this wine?

Complex layers of lemon pith, white nectarine, roasted cashew, citrus blossom and just a flicker of spice. The palate is textured, taut and savoury, with a line of minerality that cuts like a hot knife through (lemon) butter. There’s plenty of fruit, nectarine, grapefruit and pear skin, but it’s all balanced by subtly chalky minerality and mouthwatering acidity. New French oak adds a toasty, vanillan aspect, wrapping things up in structure rather than sweetness. That little hint of grapefruit pith on the finish... unbelievable.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Yering Station Estate Chardonnay showcases the cooler climate elegance of the Yarra Valley, balancing rich fruit with sophisticated minerality and restraint. Unlike many warmer climate Australian Chardonnays that can be overtly tropical, this wine emphasises stone fruit complexity and chalky minerality. The French oak treatment adds structure rather than sweetness, creating a more European-influenced style that highlights terroir over power.

The 2024 vintage represents the latest expression of Yering Station's estate fruit, capturing the most recent growing conditions in the Yarra Valley. Being so fresh, this wine displays vibrant acidity and pristine fruit definition that will continue to evolve and integrate over the next few years. The youth of this vintage means the oak influence is still prominent but will gradually marry with the fruit as the wine develops in bottle.

The wine's textured palate and savoury minerality make it exceptional with rich seafood dishes like lobster thermidor or pan-seared scallops. The toasty oak and creamy mouthfeel complement roasted chicken with herbs, while the cutting acidity can handle cream-based sauces beautifully. The wine's complexity also pairs wonderfully with aged hard cheeses or mushroom risotto, where its earthy undertones can shine.

Yering Station holds the distinction of being one of Victoria's first wineries, established in 1838, making it a true pioneer of Australian winemaking. Located in the prestigious Yarra Valley, they've consistently demonstrated that Australian Chardonnay can rival the world's best cool-climate expressions. Their estate vineyards benefit from ideal soil and climate conditions, allowing them to craft wines that showcase both power and finesse - a combination that has earned them cult status among wine enthusiasts.

Serve this Chardonnay at 10-12°C to best appreciate its complex aromatics and textural elements - too cold and you'll miss the nuanced oak integration and fruit complexity. The wine can be enjoyed now but will reward careful cellaring for 5-8 years, during which the minerality will become more pronounced and the oak will integrate further. Store horizontally in a cool, dark place away from vibration to preserve its delicate balance of fruit, oak, and acidity.
