This is Xanadu doing what it does best - bright, pure, modern chardonnay with depth, detail and serious concentration. White peach and citrus meet struck flint, saline tang and a creamy leesy texture. It's tense, taut and super refined, with heaps of joy to be found in the details. This would comfortably be in the top 10 chardonnays under $50 in the country.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Made from the revered Gingin clone, hand-picked fruit was whole bunch pressed, fermented in French oak (25% new), then left on lees for nine months with no malo (read: it's got texture without any of the flabbiness). Astoundingly zingy acid, a hint of sea spray and energetic spice, balanced by a creamy texture and pulpy orchard fruit. It’s all white pear, grapefruit, nectarine and flint on the nose, with a saline, oyster-shell sorta feeling adding tension. No heavy-handed winemaking here - just precision, poise and beautifully handled fruit. Drink now or cellar a few for the future. Either way, this is a steal.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Gingin clone is a revered Chardonnay selection that produces fruit with exceptional balance and intensity. This particular clone is known for retaining vibrant acidity while developing complex flavours, making it ideal for premium Australian Chardonnay production. When combined with careful winemaking techniques like whole bunch pressing and French oak fermentation, it creates wines with remarkable precision and aging potential.

By avoiding malolactic fermentation, the winemaker preserved the wine's natural zingy acidity and mineral tension while still achieving creamy texture through nine months of lees aging in French oak. This technique prevents the buttery, soft characteristics that malo typically brings, instead maintaining the wine's energetic spice and saline qualities. The result is a Chardonnay with both richness and vibrancy - texture without flabbiness.

While this wine is drinking beautifully now with its vibrant fruit and mineral tension, premium Margaret River Chardonnays like this can develop additional complexity over 5-8 years in proper cellar conditions. The combination of quality French oak, natural acidity, and skilled winemaking suggests it will evolve gracefully, developing more honeyed and nutty characteristics while maintaining its core fruit integrity.

The wine's saline, oyster-shell character makes it exceptional with fresh seafood, particularly oysters, lobster, or pan-seared scallops. Its creamy texture and orchard fruit flavours also complement roasted chicken, pork tenderloin, or rich fish dishes with cream-based sauces. The mineral backbone and citrus notes provide enough acidity to cut through richer preparations while the oak adds complexity to match sophisticated cuisine.

Receiving 95 points from both Paul Edwards and Ray Jordan - two highly respected Australian wine critics - indicates exceptional quality and consistency in this vintage. These scores place it among the finest Australian Chardonnays available, reflecting the wine's perfect balance of fruit, oak, and acidity. Such unanimous critical acclaim from local experts who understand Margaret River's terroir suggests this represents outstanding value for a wine of this calibre.
