Why do we love this wine?

A boutique family-run winery sourcing top-tier fruit from standout Yarra Valley sites, Wheeler Wines are making serious noise with this expressive, small-batch chardonnay. This one hails from the revered Willowlake Vineyard in the Upper Yarra - it's all about volcanic soils, handpicked fruit, natural ferment, French oak and nine months on lees - it’s got all the hallmarks of premium cool-climate chardy, and then some. It’s complex and distinctive, brimming with personality and, most importantly, flavour. It’s fresh and fragrant, with a white flower lift and a beautiful acid line that keeps everything humming whilst some deft winemaking has preserved a rich, creamy, mouth-filling texture. A chardonnay with edge, precision, and soul. Only limited cases made, so don’t sleep on this.

Wine Pilot

" It’s fragrant from the moment you unscrew the cap, with aromas that fill up the room. The first delightful scent is that of white flowers, followed by lemon, peach and some fresh honeysuckle. There’s a touch of creaminess, plus some nuts and smoke. The palate is splendid, with mellifluousness (try saying that after a few glasses) and vibrant fruit, plus heaps of acid to make it lively and fresh. While this is a great drop with some food, it’s a pleasure just sipping it slowly of an evening. 95 Points" - Brendan Black - Wine Pilot

Frequently Asked Questions

The Willowlake Vineyard sits in the Upper Yarra Valley's volcanic soils, which are prized for their mineral complexity and excellent drainage. These ancient volcanic deposits create ideal conditions for cool-climate Chardonnay, allowing the grapes to develop intense flavour concentration whilst maintaining the crisp acidity that defines premium Australian Chardonnay. The combination of elevation, volcanic terroir, and the Yarra's cool climate produces fruit with exceptional depth and character.

Natural fermentation using indigenous yeasts creates a more complex flavour profile compared to commercial yeast strains. This traditional approach allows the wine to express its terroir more authentically, contributing to the distinctive personality mentioned in the tasting notes. The process often results in more textural complexity and subtle savoury notes that complement the fruit flavours. Combined with nine months on lees, this technique builds the creamy, mouth-filling texture whilst preserving the wine's fresh, mineral-driven character.

This wine achieves the perfect balance between opulent texture and focused acidity - a hallmark of exceptional cool-climate Chardonnay. The French oak and lees contact create richness and creaminess, whilst the volcanic soils and cool Yarra Valley climate preserve bright acidity and mineral precision. This duality is what separates premium Chardonnay from simpler styles - the ability to deliver both indulgent texture and refreshing structure in harmony.

The wine's rich, creamy texture and mineral backbone make it ideal for dishes with similar weight and complexity. Think roasted chicken with herbs, lobster thermidor, or creamy mushroom risotto where the wine's acidity can cut through richness whilst its body matches the dish's intensity. The lemon zest and lime notes also pair beautifully with fresh seafood preparations, particularly those featuring butter or cream-based sauces.

Receiving 95 points from Wine Pilot and 94 points from The Wine Front is exceptional recognition for any producer, but particularly impressive for a small-batch, family-run operation like Wheeler Wines. These scores place this Chardonnay in the top tier of Australian white wines, competing with established premium labels. For boutique wineries, such critical acclaim validates their winemaking approach and often leads to cult following status amongst serious wine collectors.
