This is one of those sublime chardies that makes everyone from awarded sommeliers to casual weekend sippers weak at the knees. That's right, sophisticated and complex, for those interested; yet so. damn. yummy. You don't have to write a thesis on this beauty... but you could.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

The fruit gets a gentle press and wild ferment in old French barriques, followed by nine months resting on fine lees with a bit of bâtonnage. Some barrels go through malo, some don’t - but the balance is completely bang on. The nose is tight and chalky, with green apple, lemon peel and a hint of spice. On the palate, it's all flint, crunch and cream; white nectarine, savoury nuttiness, saline drive and a gently textural edge. It finishes long, dry and laced with minerality. Complex without being showy. Effortlessly classy. Drink it with seafood, a good cheese plate, or honestly, in your PJs on the couch. Your call.

Frequently Asked Questions

This is a small-batch, boutique production that uses wild fermentation in old French barriques rather than stainless steel tanks. The winemaker employs traditional techniques like lees stirring (bâtonnage) and partial malolactic fermentation to create complexity. Unlike commercial Chardonnays that often rely on heavy oak or residual sugar, this wine achieves its richness through careful barrel selection and extended lees contact, resulting in natural texture and minerality.

This blending technique allows Wheeler Wines to achieve perfect balance between freshness and richness. Barrels that undergo malolactic fermentation contribute creamy, buttery textures and softer acidity, while those that don't retain crisp, bright fruit character and mineral drive. By combining both approaches, the winemaker creates a more complex wine that showcases both the variety's natural acidity and its potential for textural depth.

The Yarra Valley's cool climate and diverse soils contribute to the wine's distinctive chalky, mineral character and tight structure. The region's elevation and morning fogs help retain natural acidity while allowing for full flavour development. This terroir expression is evident in the wine's flint-like minerality and saline finish, characteristics that distinguish Yarra Valley Chardonnays from warmer climate regions that produce riper, more tropical styles.

Extended lees contact is a traditional technique that adds texture, complexity, and stability to the wine without relying on new oak. The dead yeast cells (lees) slowly break down, releasing proteins and compounds that create a creamy mouthfeel and enhance the wine's natural flavours. The bâtonnage (stirring) process integrates these elements while adding subtle nuttiness and preventing reductive characters, resulting in the wine's described 'savoury nuttiness' and textural edge.

While delicious now, this wine has the structure and complexity to develop beautifully over 5-7 years. The tight, chalky nose and mineral backbone suggest it will gain richness and integration with time, while the natural acidity will preserve freshness. The 2021 vintage was exceptional in the Yarra Valley, providing ideal conditions for long-term cellaring. However, its current balance makes it equally enjoyable for immediate consumption with appropriate food pairings.
