Textural, oily and complex - this is what viognier is all about. A wine that dances on the fence between full-bodied and vibrant. A distinct mineral edge elevates the mouthfeel and brightens up the whole wine, perfectly balanced.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Viognier fans will know what they're in for here, orange blossom, marmalade and mandarin on the nose with a mouth-coating texture and subtle spice. The vibrancy of the mineral elements and natural acidity build a pleasing, lengthy, finish. Twelve months of maturation on lees brings a savoury, bread-y, hint to the wine and adds to the astounding texture. This will stand up next to anything from seafood to risotto to pork dishes, such is the power of great texture. Given that it's already aged, we'd be drinking this one in the next year or so, but if you love textural, tertiary whites - there's every indication that this could go a very, very, very long way in the cellar.

Frequently Asked Questions

Viognier is renowned for its intensely aromatic profile and luxurious, almost oily texture that coats the palate. Originally from France's Northern Rhône, this variety produces wines with signature orange blossom and stone fruit characteristics, combined with a naturally low acidity that creates that distinctive mouth-filling sensation. The Warramunda Estate 2019 exemplifies these classic Viognier traits with its marmalade and mandarin notes, plus the added complexity from twelve months of lees maturation.

Lees ageing involves leaving the wine in contact with dead yeast cells after fermentation, which dramatically enhances both texture and flavour complexity. This process adds a creamy, bread-like character while building the wine's natural body and creating that sought-after mouth-coating sensation. The twelve months of lees maturation in this Warramunda Viognier contributes savoury, biscuity notes that complement the variety's inherent fruit aromatics, resulting in a more sophisticated and textually interesting wine.

The key lies in Viognier's unique combination of aromatic intensity and substantial texture, which allows it to match both delicate and robust dishes. Unlike lighter whites that can be overwhelmed by rich foods, this wine's medium body and mouth-coating texture means it can stand up to everything from creamy risottos to pork dishes. The mineral backbone and natural acidity provide enough structure to cleanse the palate, while the aromatic complexity complements both seafood's delicate flavours and meat's richer profiles.

Scores in the low 90s from respected wine critics indicate exceptional quality, particularly for a varietal wine from a single producer. These ratings suggest the wine demonstrates excellent varietal character, balanced structure, and complexity that sets it apart from typical examples. The consistency across multiple reviewers, plus the 'Mofo Fave Producer' designation, indicates that Warramunda Estate has established a reputation for producing outstanding Viognier that consistently delivers on both technical merit and drinking pleasure.

This wine is perfectly positioned for immediate enjoyment, having already undergone beneficial ageing that has developed its tertiary characteristics and textural complexity. However, Viognier's naturally robust structure and this wine's substantial body suggest it could develop even more interesting savoury and honeyed notes with additional cellaring. If you appreciate the evolution of aromatic whites into more complex, less fruit-driven expressions, this wine shows every indication it could reward patient cellaring for several more years.
