This little drop from a Five Star Halliday rated Heathcote winery sees mostly tank fermentation to preserve the punchy, crunchy, vibrantly racy fruit characters of this wholly underrated Mediterranean grape. To fully capitalise on vermentino's luscious mouthfeel, it is also treated to some lees stirring and a small portion of old oak to really bring forth nuance and longevity in the glass. Saluti!

Why do we love this wine?

Vermentino, the refreshing white hailing from the Mediterranean island of Sardinia. Deliciously complex in taste, yet familiar enough to please lovers of more well-known whites such as pinot grigio, sauv blanc, albarino, and riesling. It's also finding itself a comfy home in some of the warmer regions of Aus due to its ability to retain acidity in the heat. In particular, this hardy, delicious grape thrives with Heathcote's warm days and cool nights. Vale versatile vermentino!

Frequently Asked Questions

Vermentino offers a unique Mediterranean character that bridges the gap between familiar whites like Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon Blanc. Originally from Sardinia, this grape variety brings delicious complexity while maintaining the approachable freshness that white wine lovers appreciate. Its natural ability to retain bright acidity even in warm climates makes it particularly exciting for Australian wine regions like Heathcote.

Heathcote's distinctive climate of warm days and cool nights creates ideal conditions for Vermentino to flourish. This temperature variation allows the grape to develop its characteristic flavours while preserving the crisp acidity that makes Vermentino so refreshing. The region's terroir helps produce wines that showcase both the grape's Mediterranean heritage and Australian winemaking excellence.

With its green apple, pear, and herbaceous notes, this Vermentino pairs beautifully with seafood, particularly grilled fish or shellfish. The wine's light body and aromatic profile also complement fresh salads, goat cheese, and Mediterranean dishes with herbs. Its crisp acidity makes it an excellent aperitif wine that cleanses the palate between courses.

Serve this Vermentino well-chilled at 8-10°C to highlight its refreshing qualities and aromatic intensity. As a young 2023 vintage, it's designed to be enjoyed now while the fruit flavours are at their peak freshness. Store bottles in a cool, dark place and consume within 2-3 years to appreciate the wine's vibrant character and crisp acidity.

The Five Star Halliday Winery rating indicates this producer is recognised among Australia's elite winemakers, consistently delivering exceptional quality across their range. Combined with the 'Killer Vintage' designation, this suggests 2023 was an outstanding year for this particular Vermentino. These accolades reflect both the winery's expertise and the exceptional growing conditions that produced this vintage.
