Why do we love this wine?

The 2013 vintage in the Yarra Valley was marked by low yields, but what was produced was excellent - a 'near perfect' growing season. The resulting wines, while scarce, were focused, intense and long lived. We say all that because this wine typifies that excellence to a tee - bright snappy citrus sits on the back of complex stoney minerality. Above all else, it feels sophisticated and high brow. This is borrowing a little limelight from the whites of Burgundy we reckon, it might even be a contender to steal that focus for good. There is lanolin, cashew, and lemon flesh on offer, and the finish is tinged by subtle salinity. While there are flashes of age throughout, the wine is still marked by freshness and vibrancy. This is a brilliant wine that is equal parts academic and delicious. A must have for anyone who considers themselves a part of the chardonnay fan club.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2013 vintage represents a 'near perfect' growing season in the Yarra Valley, producing wines of exceptional quality despite low yields. At over a decade old, this Chardonnay has developed the complex secondary characteristics that define museum releases - lanolin richness, cashew notes, and sophisticated minerality - while remarkably retaining its freshness and vibrancy. These aged Chardonnays become increasingly rare and valuable as they demonstrate how premium Australian whites can rival the longevity of great Burgundies.

This Carlei Estate Chardonnay exhibits the hallmark characteristics of premium Burgundian whites - complex stoney minerality, sophisticated structure, and that elusive combination of power and elegance. The wine's academic complexity, subtle salinity, and ability to age gracefully mirrors the best examples from Cote de Beaune. However, it maintains distinctly Australian characteristics with brighter citrus intensity and a more pronounced fruit-forward approach that reflects the Yarra Valley's unique terroir.

The 2013 vintage in the Yarra Valley is remembered as exceptional due to ideal growing conditions that produced concentrated, long-lived wines despite significantly reduced yields. Lower yields typically result in more intense flavour concentration as the vines focus their energy into fewer bunches. This vintage produced wines with remarkable focus and intensity that have proven their aging potential, making bottles like this Carlei Estate increasingly sought-after as they demonstrate the vintage's legendary status.

Serve this museum release Chardonnay slightly warmer than typical whites - around 12-14°C - to allow its complex secondary flavours like lanolin and cashew to fully express themselves. The wine's full-bodied nature and sophisticated minerality make it perfect for rich dishes like roasted chicken with herbs, lobster thermidor, or aged hard cheeses. Decanting 30 minutes before serving can help integrate the wine's mature elements and showcase its remarkable balance of age and freshness.

Absolutely - this Chardonnay exemplifies how premium Australian whites can age beautifully when made with proper structure and balance. While showing sophisticated signs of maturity through its lanolin and cashew characteristics, the wine retains remarkable freshness and vibrancy that speaks to both the exceptional 2013 vintage and Carlei's winemaking expertise. The persistent citrus brightness and mineral backbone suggest this wine could continue developing for several more years, making it a perfect example of why serious collectors seek out aged Australian Chardonnay.
