Grüner veltliner seems to have discovered its perfect Australian postcode in the Adelaide Hills, and this Woodside sub-region stunner backs up that theory spectacularly. Should drink gorgeously over next two to four years while fruit vibrancy and textural magic remain firing on all cylinders. We like this a lot - another gem proving Austrian varieties can absolutely thrive down under when planted in the right spots with the right hands guiding them.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Grüner veltliner's found its ideal Australian home in Adelaide Hills and particularly in the sub-region of Woodside. Don't believe us? One sip of this bad-boy will show you what we're talking about. This vineyard was planted in 2010 meaning it's really hitting that sweet maturity spot, fermented in five-tonne open fermenters, finished in French oak (20% new) for that little extra something. We end up with a deep yellow colour flowing into bright stone fruit, orange rind, walnut, pear and florals. A supple, seductive, creamy texture leads the way before the whole palate shifts to the spicy side of things with pepper hints, great length and fine balance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Adelaide Hills, particularly the Woodside sub-region, provides the perfect cool-climate conditions that mirror Gruner Veltliner's Austrian origins. The elevation and temperature variations allow the variety to develop its characteristic spicy complexity while maintaining bright acidity. This wine demonstrates how Australian terroir can enhance traditional European varieties, creating expressions that are both true to type and uniquely Australian.

The restrained use of new French oak adds subtle texture and complexity without overwhelming the variety's natural character. French oak imparts gentle vanilla and spice notes that complement Gruner Veltliner's inherent peppery qualities, while the majority aged in older oak preserves the wine's fresh fruit expression. This careful balance creates the wine's described 'supple, seductive, creamy texture' while maintaining varietal integrity.

Planted in 2010, these vines are now 14 years old and entering their prime productive phase. Mature vines develop deeper root systems that access more complex soil nutrients, resulting in grapes with greater concentration and flavour complexity. This maturity explains the wine's impressive depth of flavour, from stone fruit to walnut notes, and contributes to its excellent balance and length.

This wine's combination of stone fruit richness and spicy finish makes it exceptionally food-friendly. The creamy texture pairs beautifully with seafood dishes, particularly those with herb crusts or light cream sauces. The peppery spice notes complement Asian cuisine, while the wine's acidity cuts through rich dishes like roasted chicken or pork with fruit-based sauces.

A 90-point rating from a boutique producer indicates exceptional quality that typically commands premium prices. The 'Dangerous Value' designation suggests this wine delivers luxury-level complexity and craftsmanship at an accessible price point. The combination of mature vineyard fruit, careful winemaking techniques, and the emerging reputation of Adelaide Hills Gruner Veltliner creates outstanding value for discerning wine lovers.
