This is the real thing. One of Australia's most loved chardonnays by media-types and punters alike. If you like your chardonnay, you can't go wrong here. This what happens when you do the basics really, really, really well. Exceptional.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

This is a serious and sumptuous Tapanappa Tiers. A super high-quality oak regime has made this a generous and approachable wine. Luckily a cooler vintage has ensured that all the generosity of flavour and fruit is paired perfectly with refreshing acid line that rounds out the wine perfectly and has you reaching for another glass. If you like your chardy with plenty of body and flavour, get a bottle of this and make it your fancy-pants chardonnay to put away for the perfect moment.

Halliday Wine Companion

Halliday Wine Companion

"From the Tiers Vineyard planted in 1979. A third of the barrels used are new French oak. The cooler year renders a wine of tension and torsion, precision and finesse. It’s heavily perfumed, an invitation to drink lustily, with green apple, lime, ginger, cinnamon and faint alpine herb characters lightly dusted with clove-cedar oak. Just so. The palate has immense vitality and length, a pleasing, almost lightly hazy texture captured in ripples of briny acidity holding in more apple, cinnamon, clove and licks of peach and green almond. Lots going on here; an immensely satisfying and serious wine. And delicious, importantly." - Mike Bennie, Halliday Wine Companion

Frequently Asked Questions

While Adelaide Hills is known for elegant, cool-climate Chardonnays, this Tiers Vineyard expression pushes boundaries with its full-bodied, sumptuous profile. The 'super high-quality oak regime' creates a more generous style that balances power with the region's natural acidity. This represents the warmer, more protected sites within Adelaide Hills that can produce richer Chardonnays while maintaining the region's signature freshness.

These flavours create a classic oak-influenced Chardonnay profile where fruit meets spice and wood. The apple provides the fresh fruit foundation typical of cool-climate Chardonnay, while gingerbread suggests complex spice development from quality oak and possibly malolactic fermentation. Vanilla indicates careful barrel selection and toasting levels that complement rather than overwhelm the fruit, creating the 'generous and approachable' character described.

The remarkable consistency of 96-point scores from six different critics suggests exceptional winemaking execution and vintage conditions. Critics rarely align so closely unless a wine demonstrates outstanding balance, complexity and regional expression. The cooler 2023 vintage likely preserved acidity while allowing full flavour development, creating the perfect marriage of richness and freshness that appeals to diverse palates and tasting philosophies.

This phrase indicates the wine has both immediate appeal and cellaring potential, typical of premium Chardonnays with quality oak integration. The full body and balanced acidity provide the structural foundation for aging, while the generous fruit will evolve into more complex tertiary flavours over 5-8 years. The 'perfect moment' reference suggests this is a wine worthy of special occasions, whether enjoyed now or after careful cellaring.

Tiers Vineyard is one of Tapanappa's premium single-vineyard sites, likely chosen for its specific terroir that produces concentrated, age-worthy Chardonnay. The vineyard's aspect, soil composition and microclimate allow for the development of the rich, full-bodied style while maintaining Adelaide Hills' characteristic acidity. Single-vineyard designations like this typically represent the producer's finest fruit and most careful winemaking, explaining the wine's exceptional critical reception.
