Creamy, textured, shapely on the palate - that's the quality of the oak on show. There is some beeswax-y, toasty nuance, too. The main act, though, is the excellent fruit quality on show.

Why do we love this wine?

Green apple, winter pear, some papaya, grapefruit, and whole citrus - the complexity of the fruit pulls you deeper into the wine, inviting and delighting the senses. The finish is marked by precise acidity and palate richness, both in perfect step with one another. This is 2023 vintage that is drinking well now, but it will reward your patience. The Pyrenees often gets a little overlooked when it comes to Victorian wine regions, but we're looking to rectify that. Some of the states greatest wines come from these humble hills out west.

From one of the founding wineries of the Pyrenees in North Western Victoria. This is a racy and quite steely chardonnay, yet one that wraps a fleshy stone fruit driven palate around the linear core. Plenty of winemaking in here with fermentation in oak and a further eight months on lees. A lift of citrus balances the nectarine and lightly peachy nuances. Balanced with a refreshing acidity for excellent drinking.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Pyrenees region in Victoria is often underestimated but produces some of the state's greatest wines due to its unique terroir. The humble hills and cooler climate west of Melbourne create ideal conditions for developing the complex fruit flavours found in this Chardonnay - from green apple and winter pear to tropical papaya notes. The region's elevation and continental climate allow for extended ripening periods, resulting in wines with both intensity and elegance.

This full-bodied Chardonnay showcases the richer, more textural style that Chardonnay can achieve when given proper winemaking treatment. The creamy, vanilla, and gingerbread characteristics suggest oak influence and possibly malolactic fermentation, which creates a rounder mouthfeel compared to crisp, unoaked styles. The palate richness mentioned in the tasting notes indicates substantial fruit concentration and body weight that can stand up to richer foods.

The complex fruit spectrum from citrus to tropical notes, combined with creamy vanilla undertones, makes this Chardonnay incredibly food-friendly. It pairs beautifully with roasted chicken, lobster with butter sauce, or creamy pasta dishes where the wine's richness complements rather than competes. The precise acidity mentioned in the description also makes it suitable for cutting through richer dishes like pork belly or aged cheeses.

While this Chardonnay is drinking beautifully now with its vibrant fruit expression and balanced acidity, it's designed to reward patience. Quality Chardonnays from cool climate regions like the Pyrenees often develop more complex honeyed and nutty characteristics with 3-5 years of cellaring. The wine's structure and precise acidity provide the backbone needed for graceful ageing, allowing the fruit flavours to integrate further with any oak influences.

James Halliday's Five Star rating represents the pinnacle of Australian winemaking excellence, awarded to fewer than 3% of wineries nationally. This recognition indicates Taltarni consistently produces wines of exceptional quality across their range, not just individual bottlings. For consumers, it's a reliable indicator that this Chardonnay comes from a producer with proven track record, sophisticated winemaking techniques, and commitment to expressing their Pyrenees terroir at the highest level.
