We’re ecstatic about Tabalí here at the ‘Fo. We’ve been bringing these into Australia exclusively for a few years now, and the wines just keep getting better. Their chardonnay was of course the initial attention grabber (trust me when I say that South America is doing some incredible stuff with chardy right now).

Why do we love this wine?

So this is where the love affair commenced. Chardonnay from the unique Talinay vineyard, a location 12kms from the Pacific Ocean and nestled adjacent to Fray Jorge National Park. The soil is fractured limestone with calcium carbonate, providing exceptional drainage and imparting minerality in the wine. Fruit is hand harvested and pressed in whole clusters, leading to small vat ferments followed by 10 months in a selection of high-end French oak. Whilst the minerality is the calling card for this vineyard, the wine comes into balance with its creamy palate, citrus purity and harmonious freshness. This has elegance and drive through and through, proving itself worthy of the lofty critical accolades imparted upon it.

The 2022 Talinay Chardonnay was selected from the slopes in Talinay that are cooler and richer in limestone and have a strong influence from the sea, which makes the wine vibrant and distinctly salty, closer to a Chablis than a Côte d'Or wine in style, with notes of iodine and sea breeze. It fermented with indigenous yeasts in used oak barrels, where it matured for 10 months. It has 12.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.1 and 8.4 grams of acidity, quite incredible for a year like 2020 that was warm and very dry. It has a sharp, austere and mineral palate.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Talinay vineyard sits just 12 kilometres from the Pacific Ocean, creating a unique microclimate that brings cooling maritime influences essential for maintaining Chardonnay's natural acidity. The proximity to Fray Jorge National Park adds to the pristine environment, while the fractured limestone soils with calcium carbonate provide exceptional drainage and impart the distinctive minerality that has become this vineyard's signature. This combination of coastal cooling and mineral-rich terroir creates ideal conditions for producing elegant, balanced Chardonnay with both power and finesse.

The hand-harvesting and whole cluster pressing preserve the fruit's delicate aromatics and prevent harsh extraction, while the small vat fermentation allows for precise control over flavour development. The 10 months in high-end French oak adds complexity and the signature creamy texture without overwhelming the wine's natural citrus purity. This careful balance between traditional techniques and modern precision results in a Chardonnay that showcases both the vineyard's mineral backbone and the winemaker's skill in creating textural harmony.

With scores ranging from 94-96 points from prestigious critics like James Suckling and Robert Parker, this Chardonnay represents the pinnacle of Chilean white wine achievement. The critics recognise the wine's rare combination of mineral precision from the limestone soils, elegant oak integration, and the distinctive terroir expression that sets it apart from typical New World Chardonnays. The consistent high scores across multiple respected publications demonstrate that this wine successfully bridges Old World elegance with New World fruit intensity, creating something truly exceptional in the global Chardonnay landscape.

The wine's mineral backbone and creamy texture make it exceptional with seafood, particularly grilled fish, lobster, or scallops where the minerality complements the ocean flavours. The citrus purity and medium body also pair beautifully with roasted chicken, creamy pasta dishes, or aged cheeses like Gruyère. The French oak influence and textural complexity can handle richer preparations, while the fresh acidity cuts through cream-based sauces, making it versatile enough for both casual dining and special occasions.

This Talinay Chardonnay offers a unique middle ground between Burgundian elegance and New World richness, with its coastal Chilean terroir providing something distinctly different from both. Unlike many Australian Chardonnays that can be fruit-forward, or Californian versions that might emphasise oak, this wine prioritises mineral expression and natural balance. The limestone soils create similarities to Chablis, while the warmer climate adds more generous fruit character, resulting in a style that's both internationally recognisable yet uniquely Chilean in its expression of place.
