This is pinot gris the Sorby Adams way - hands-on, heartfelt and handcrafted from vine to bottle. Grown in a single-vineyard, where the McPherson family’s been tending vines for four generations, it’s a wine that celebrates site and skill in equal measure.

Why do we love this wine?

Sorby Adams is one whose reds we have adored, and as we dabble into some whites we're continually astounded by how good these wines are. Having been head winemaker at Yalumba for 20 years, Simon certainly knows how to make top quality vino. This single-vineyard pinot gris is equally powerful and restrained. Showing layered notes of ripe pear, apple pie, and baking spices in a nuanced textural package, this pinot gris is perhaps one of the best we've ever offered in value and quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

This single-vineyard Pinot Gris showcases the sophisticated winemaking approach of Simon Adams, former head winemaker at Yalumba for two decades. Unlike many Australian Pinot Gris that lean heavily fruit-forward, this wine balances power with restraint, offering complex layers of ripe pear and apple pie complemented by warming baking spices. The textural nuance reflects careful vineyard selection and winemaking precision that elevates it beyond standard commercial examples.

Serve this Pinot Gris lightly chilled at 8-10°C to preserve its delicate minerality while allowing the ripe pear and spice notes to shine. The wine's light body and fresh, juicy style make it perfect as an aperitif or paired with seafood, soft cheeses, or Asian cuisine. Consider decanting briefly if serving immediately after opening to help the complex aromatics fully express themselves.

The wine's combination of white peach fruit, minerality, and baking spice notes creates excellent pairing opportunities with both delicate and moderately rich dishes. Try it with pan-seared scallops, roasted chicken with herbs, or creamy pasta dishes where the wine's textural complexity won't be overwhelmed. The fresh, juicy character also complements spicy Asian dishes, particularly Thai or Vietnamese cuisine where the wine's restraint balances heat and bold flavours.

This 2025 Pinot Gris is crafted in a style that's immediately approachable and designed to showcase its fresh, vibrant character. While the wine's quality suggests it could develop additional complexity over 2-3 years, Pinot Gris generally peaks within its first few years when its mineral precision and fruit purity are at their most expressive. Drink now through 2027 for optimal enjoyment of its nuanced textural qualities.

This recognition reflects the consistent quality and innovation that Simon Adams brings to his winemaking, building on his extensive experience at one of Australia's most respected wineries. The 'Dangerous Value' rating particularly highlights how Sorby Adams delivers premium wine quality at accessible price points, making exceptional wines available to a broader audience. This combination of critical acclaim and value positioning suggests a producer focused on craftsmanship rather than just commercial success.
