Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Sorby Adams is one whose reds we have adored, and as we dabble into some whites we're continually astounded by how good these wines are. Having been head winemaker at Yalumba for 20 years, he certainly knows how to make top quality vino. This chardy is genuinely unbelievable value for money: texturally it flows on the palate like a plush peach. Time on lees has meant that it has a yoghurty, creamy consistency and the finish is ever so delightful. I'm really damn excited about this wine, and I reckon you will be too Mofo.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine showcases traditional French winemaking techniques with extended lees contact, creating that distinctive creamy, yoghurty texture that's rare at this price point. The winemaker's 20-year tenure at Yalumba brings serious pedigree to this handcrafted approach. Unlike mass-produced Chardonnays that rely heavily on oak chips, this wine achieves its complexity through patient cellaring and careful handling of the lees.

Serve this Chardonnay slightly chilled at 10-12°C to highlight its textural qualities without muting the tropical fruit flavours. The medium body and creamy consistency make it perfect for pairing with rich seafood dishes, roasted chicken, or creamy pasta. Decanting isn't necessary, but letting it breathe for 15-20 minutes after opening will allow the oak integration to fully express itself.

Lees are the dead yeast cells that remain after fermentation, and leaving the wine in contact with them creates that signature creamy, yoghurty texture described in this Chardonnay. This traditional technique, called sur lie aging, adds complexity and a silky mouthfeel while reducing the need for excessive oak. It's a hallmark of quality winemaking that transforms simple fruit flavours into something far more sophisticated and food-friendly.

This 2023 Chardonnay is drinking beautifully now, with its tropical fruit and creamy texture in perfect harmony. While most Australian Chardonnays are best enjoyed within 2-3 years of vintage, the quality winemaking here suggests it could develop additional complexity over the next 12-18 months. The textural style and oak integration indicate it's built for immediate pleasure rather than long-term cellaring.

South Australia's diverse climate zones allow winemakers to craft Chardonnays with both power and finesse, avoiding the overly buttery styles of warmer regions or the austere minerality of cooler climates. The region's established viticulture and winemaking expertise, exemplified by producers like Sorby Adams, creates wines that balance tropical fruit intensity with sophisticated textural elements. This particular wine showcases how South Australian Chardonnay can deliver premium quality at accessible prices.
