Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Is there anything the Schaal’s can’t do? They’ve clearly mastered South African and Alsatian wine and here’s a bit more of that ‘proof is in the pudding’. Sophie’s Alsace riesling is a blend of fruit from two vineyards representing the major soil types in the region - granitic with mica and clayey limestone. The wine is laser sharp with an expression of fresh lime, lemon curd, green apple, slate and orange blossom. Refreshing, bracing and complete, the perfect example of the style.

Frequently Asked Questions

Alsace Rieslings like Sophie Schaal's are typically drier and more mineral-driven than their German counterparts, reflecting the region's unique terroir between the Vosges Mountains and Rhine River. The blend of granitic with mica and clayey limestone soils creates that distinctive slate character and laser-sharp acidity. While German Rieslings often showcase residual sweetness, Alsace versions emphasise pure fruit expression and minerality, making them excellent food wines.

The pronounced minerality comes from the dual soil composition - granitic soils with mica provide that slate-like backbone, while clayey limestone adds structure and freshness. Riesling is particularly adept at expressing terroir, acting like a geological translator that captures the essence of where it's grown. The 2023 vintage's youth also contributes to the bracing acidity and vibrant citrus notes that make this wine so refreshing.

The wine's bright acidity and mineral profile make it a natural match for seafood, particularly shellfish, sushi, or grilled fish with herbs. The lime and green apple notes complement Asian cuisine beautifully, especially dishes with ginger or lemongrass. Its light body and refreshing character also work wonderfully with soft cheeses, charcuterie, or as an aperitif - the orange blossom aromatics add an elegant touch to any occasion.

Organic certification means Sophie Schaal uses no synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilisers in the vineyard, allowing the natural terroir to shine through more clearly. This approach often results in more expressive, terroir-driven wines with greater complexity and authenticity. The healthy soil biology in organic vineyards can contribute to the wine's mineral expression and overall balance, which is particularly evident in this Riesling's pure, unmasked fruit and mineral character.

While delicious now with its fresh lime and lemon curd flavours, quality Alsace Rieslings like this can age gracefully for 5-8 years, developing honeyed complexity while retaining their mineral backbone. The wine's natural acidity acts as a preservative, allowing the orange blossom aromatics to evolve into more complex petrol and lanolin notes over time. However, given its vibrant, youthful character, many will prefer drinking it within the next 2-3 years to enjoy its pristine freshness.
