This is an absolute classic. No wine exemplifies Alsace riesling quite like this one. Laser sharp with an expression of fresh lime, lemon curd, green apple, slate and orange blossom. Tight and bright where you want, rich and complex where you need. Wonderfully balanced.

Why do we love this wine?

Is there anything the Schaals can’t do? They’ve clearly mastered South African and Alsatian wine and here’s a bit more of that ‘proof is in the pudding’. Sophie’s Alsace riesling is a blend of fruit from two vineyards representing the major soil types in the region - granitic with mica and clayey limestone. Refreshing, bracing and complete, the perfect example of the style.

Frequently Asked Questions

Alsace Rieslings like this Sophie Schaal are typically drier and more mineral-driven than their German counterparts, thanks to Alsace's unique continental climate and diverse soil types. The region's protection by the Vosges Mountains creates ideal conditions for producing Rieslings with pronounced acidity and distinctive terroir expression. This wine showcases the classic Alsace style with its fresh, juicy character and crisp apple-lime profile.

As a 2024 release, this Riesling represents the latest harvest and showcases the grape's youthful vibrancy at its peak. Young Rieslings often display more pronounced citrus notes and crisp acidity, which will evolve and integrate over the next 3-5 years. The fresh apple and lime characteristics you'll taste now will gradually develop more complex honeyed and petrol notes that Riesling is famous for as it ages.

The wine's medium body and fresh, juicy style with apple-lime flavours makes it incredibly food-friendly, particularly with Alsatian cuisine like choucroute or tarte flambée. Its crisp acidity cuts through rich dishes while complementing seafood, Asian cuisine with mild spice, and soft cheeses. The mineral backbone typical of Alsace wines also pairs beautifully with oysters and other shellfish.

Sophie Schaal represents the new generation of Alsace winemakers who focus on expressing pure terroir through minimal intervention techniques. Her approach emphasises capturing the natural freshness and mineral complexity that Alsace soils can impart to Riesling. The 90-point rating reflects her skill in crafting wines that balance traditional Alsace character with modern precision and clarity.

Serve this Riesling well-chilled at 8-10°C to highlight its fresh, crisp character and allow the apple-lime notes to shine. Store bottles on their side in a cool, dark place away from temperature fluctuations. While delicious now, this wine can develop additional complexity over the next 2-3 years, with the potential for the classic Riesling petrol notes to emerge alongside the fruit.
