This is a big deal. The Sidewood Mappinga chardonnay- long awaited, top tier, infinitely beautiful chardy. The 2021 vintage is perhaps one of the best, and the critics agree as well.

Why do we love this wine?

Great wine, great value, great bloody choice. The Mappinga chardy is always hot property, and I couldn't be prouder to bring this wine to our mofos after all this time. Sidewood are masters of elegance, and this is exactly that: a fine balance between vibrant citrus and white stone fruit harmonised against the richer vanilla and melon characters. I mean, just read that review from Halliday Wine Companion and tell us you're not salivating. It's a no-brainer.

Barrel fermented spontaneously as partial whole bunches before further ageing for 10 months. The bells and whistles have been thrown at this, yet the result is delicious. White fig, cantaloupe and nectarine densely packed within a carapace of vanillin pod oak and juicy acidity, all shimmering across the textural scape and dragging the flavours long, crunchy and succulent.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Mappinga showcases Sidewood's signature elegance through its masterful balance between bright citrus and stone fruit with richer vanilla and melon characters. This Adelaide Hills expression demonstrates how cool-climate Chardonnay can achieve full-bodied richness without losing freshness. The wine's complexity comes from the region's unique terroir, where diurnal temperature variation preserves acidity while allowing for optimal flavour development.

The 2021 Mappinga has earned exceptional recognition including 98 points from Winestate Magazine and James Halliday's Special Value Award, reflecting its outstanding quality-to-price ratio. International competitions have also taken notice, with double gold and great gold medals from European wine challenges. This level of acclaim demonstrates that Adelaide Hills Chardonnay can compete with the world's finest, combining technical excellence with distinctive regional character.

The wine's rich vanilla and butterscotch notes make it perfect for creamy seafood dishes like lobster thermidor or pan-seared scallops with cauliflower puree. The apple and citrus backbone provides enough acidity to cut through rich poultry dishes such as roast chicken with herbs or turkey with sage stuffing. For cheese lovers, try it with aged cheddar or camembert, where the wine's full body can match the intensity of the cheese.

Serve this Chardonnay slightly chilled at 10-12°C to allow its complex flavours to unfold properly - too cold and you'll miss the vanilla and butterscotch nuances. The wine can be enjoyed now but will continue developing for 3-5 years if stored properly in a cool, dark place. Decanting isn't necessary, but allowing it to breathe for 15-20 minutes after opening will help integrate the oak and fruit components.

Adelaide Hills' elevation and cool climate create perfect conditions for Chardonnay, with warm days allowing fruit ripening and cool nights preserving natural acidity. The region's diverse soils and microclimates enable winemakers like Sidewood to craft wines with both power and finesse. This terroir produces Chardonnays that express both the variety's inherent elegance and Australia's fruit-forward character, resulting in wines that age gracefully while remaining approachable in their youth.
