A masterclass in varietal correctness - beeswax, ripe citrus, full without being heavy, uber-clean. This wine does everything aged semm should, and it does it brilliantly.

Why do we love this wine?

This was one of those lucky finds - a small parcel (the best ones often are) tucked away in the shed of one of WA's most premier producers of long lived whites and reds. The wines are pristine: fresh, varietal, energetic, and showing beautiful synergy between primary fruits and tertiary nuance.

Frequently Asked Questions

This is a rare museum release from one of Western Australia's premier producers, discovered as a small parcel tucked away in their cellar. At 18 years of age, this Semillon represents a unique opportunity to experience how this variety develops extraordinary complexity with extended cellaring. Once this limited parcel is gone, finding another bottle of this calibre and vintage will be nearly impossible.

While young Semillon typically shows crisp citrus and herbaceous notes, this 2006 has undergone a remarkable transformation over 18 years. The wine now displays rich marmalade characters alongside its original lemon zest, with developed minerality that speaks to Frankland River's unique terroir. This evolution from primary fruit to tertiary complexity is what makes aged Semillon one of Australia's most rewarding wine experiences.

Frankland River's cool climate and ancient soils create the perfect conditions for Semillon that can age gracefully for decades. The region's mineral-rich granite and gneiss soils contribute to the wine's distinctive minerally backbone, while the cool temperatures preserve natural acidity essential for long-term cellaring. This terroir allows Semillon to develop the complex interplay between fruit intensity and mineral precision that defines great aged examples.

James Halliday's 94-point score places this Semillon in the 'outstanding wine of exemplary quality' category, reserved for fewer than 5% of wines reviewed. The accompanying Five Red Star winery rating indicates the producer is among Australia's finest, with a track record of exceptional winemaking. For a museum release to achieve this recognition demonstrates both the wine's current drinking perfection and the producer's mastery of crafting age-worthy whites.

Serve this aged Semillon slightly warmer than typical whites (10-12°C) to allow its complex aromatics to fully express themselves. The wine's rich, full style and marmalade notes make it perfect with aged cheeses, roasted chicken with herbs, or seafood in cream-based sauces. The minerally finish also complements oysters beautifully, creating a classic pairing that highlights both the wine's elegance and power.
