Why do we love this wine?

Whether we’ll admit it or not, we all play favourites, and this chardonnay comes from one of our favourite wineries in the biz, Rob Dolan Wines. It’s bursting with personality (much like the the larger-than-life Rob himself). There’s a nice line of lemony citrus, hints of cashew and a sneaky oak backbone holding it all together. If you've ever met Rob you've probably heard him sing the praises of Yea as a growing region, so while this is mainly Yarra Valley fruit there's a bit of Yea chardonnay in there, too. It gives the wine breadth and oh-so important palate weight. Pour us another glass and let's get settled in.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Rob Dolan Chardonnay showcases a more restrained oak approach, with what's described as a 'sneaky oak backbone' that supports rather than dominates the fruit. The lemony citrus and green apple flavours shine through clearly, representing the modern Australian style that balances oak integration with fresh fruit expression. This approach allows the terroir characteristics from both Yarra Valley and Yea regions to express themselves authentically.

The combination of Yarra Valley and Yea fruit is a deliberate winemaking strategy to create complexity and palate weight. Yarra Valley contributes elegant structure and finesse, while the Yea component adds breadth and body to the wine. This regional blending technique is common among skilled winemakers who understand how different terroirs can complement each other, resulting in a more complete and balanced final wine.

The citrus-driven profile and cashew hints make this chardonnay versatile for both lighter and richer dishes. The lemony acidity cuts through creamy sauces beautifully, making it perfect for seafood risotto or roasted chicken. The medium body and subtle oak can also handle slightly richer preparations like pan-fried fish with almonds or even pork tenderloin with apple compote.

This 2023 vintage exemplifies the contemporary Australian chardonnay movement towards freshness and regional expression over heavy oak manipulation. The 'fresh, juicy' style with prominent citrus characteristics reflects winemakers' focus on capturing vintage conditions and site-specific qualities. The 94-point Wine Orbit rating suggests this vintage successfully balances modern techniques with traditional chardonnay appeal.

The cashew characteristics likely come from a combination of subtle oak influence and the wine's natural texture development. These nutty notes add complexity beyond the primary citrus flavours, providing a creamy, almost buttery mouthfeel without overwhelming richness. This flavour component bridges the gap between the bright acidity and the wine's medium body, creating the palate weight that makes this chardonnay so food-friendly.
