Why do we love this wine?

Riesling is what put Frankland River, and the greater Great Southern region, right at the forefront of Australian wine production. The soils around the area are rocky and packed full of mineralic goodness, this is imparted in the wine, bringing a vibrance and careful salinity to an otherwise racy and deeply zesty palate. The natural acid pairs with the minerality and citrusy fruit characteristics perfectly to create and energetic and racy wine with pure fruit and a long, tingly finish. Seriously good stuff.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frankland River's rocky, mineral-rich soils create a distinctive terroir that sets it apart from other Australian Riesling regions like Clare Valley or Eden Valley. The mineralic goodness from these soils translates directly into the wine, providing a vibrant salinity and backbone that complements the variety's natural acidity. This geological influence, combined with the region's cool climate, produces Rieslings with exceptional purity and a signature 'tingly' minerality that wine enthusiasts recognise as quintessentially Great Southern.

The 2024 vintage has been rated as a 'Killer Vintage', indicating exceptional growing conditions that produced fruit with optimal balance and concentration. Young Rieslings like this 2024 are brilliant for immediate drinking, showcasing vibrant citrus and mineral characters at their peak freshness. However, quality Rieslings also have excellent ageing potential - this wine could develop beautiful honeyed complexity and petrol notes over 5-10 years, while maintaining its core acidity and mineral backbone.

The wine's racy acidity and mineral-driven profile make it exceptional with seafood, particularly oysters, sashimi, or grilled fish where the salinity creates a beautiful bridge. The allspice notes and citrusy character also complement Asian cuisines brilliantly - think Thai salads, Vietnamese pho, or spicy Szechuan dishes where the wine's freshness cuts through heat and complexity. Light poultry dishes, goat's cheese, or even just sipping solo as an aperitif showcase its pure, energetic character perfectly.

Premium Frankland River Rieslings from established producers typically command much higher prices, especially those with estate-grown fruit and exceptional vintage ratings. This 'Black Market Deal' offers access to what appears to be a seriously underpriced wine from a 'Mofo Fave Producer' - likely a well-regarded winery selling under a different label or through exclusive channels. The combination of killer vintage quality, estate fruit, and the region's reputation suggests you're getting significantly more wine than you're paying for.

Serve well-chilled at 8-10°C to highlight the wine's vibrant acidity and mineral precision - any warmer and you'll lose that essential 'racy' character. Store bottles on their side in a cool, dark place if you plan to age them, though this 2024 is drinking beautifully now. The natural acidity acts as a preservative, so opened bottles will stay fresh in the fridge for 3-4 days. Consider decanting briefly if you want to soften the initial zing and allow the mineral complexity to fully express itself.
