Why do we love this wine?

If someone asked us what makes Eden Valley riesling so special, we'd hand them a bottle of this. Complex limey notes and crunchy green apple supported by racy acid and peppy minerality. It's textbook Eden, refreshing, clean and crisp but there's a generosity of flavour on the palate that places this wine much higher up the shelf than the price would suggest. We love how this wine is drinking at this moment but If you're looking for a riz to age, this will go the distance. We've recently tried vintages of this beauty going all the way back to 2013 and the retention of fruit and acid is something to behold.

Frequently Asked Questions

Eden Valley sits at higher altitude in South Australia's Adelaide Hills, creating cooler conditions that preserve the natural acidity and delicate aromatics that riesling craves. The region's ancient soils contribute distinctive mineral complexity, while the diurnal temperature variation allows for slow, even ripening. This combination produces rieslings with exceptional balance between fruit intensity and crisp acidity, making Eden Valley one of Australia's most respected riesling regions alongside Clare Valley.

This Eden Valley riesling has excellent ageing potential, with the producer's older vintages from 2013 still showing remarkable fruit retention and acid structure. Quality Australian rieslings typically develop beautifully over 8-15 years, evolving from fresh citrus and apple notes to complex honey, toast and petrol characteristics. The wine's racy acidity and mineral backbone provide the structural foundation needed for long-term cellaring, though it's equally rewarding to drink now while the primary fruit flavours are at their peak.

The wine's crisp acidity and mineral drive make it exceptional with seafood, particularly oysters, sashimi, or grilled fish with citrus. The citrus and green apple notes complement Asian cuisines beautifully, especially Thai salads, Vietnamese pho, or Japanese dishes with ginger and lime. For cheese pairings, try fresh goat's cheese or aged gruyere, while the wine's clean finish also works wonderfully as an aperitif or with light summer salads featuring herbs and vinaigrette dressings.

Serve this riesling well-chilled at 8-10°C to showcase its crisp acidity and delicate aromatics - any warmer and you'll lose the refreshing character that makes Eden Valley riesling so appealing. Unlike red wines, riesling doesn't require decanting as it benefits from preserving its fresh, primary fruit characters. However, allowing the wine to breathe in the glass for a few minutes can help the mineral complexity and citrus notes to fully express themselves.

Racy acidity refers to bright, vibrant, almost electric acidity that gives the wine energy and freshness on the palate. In riesling, this creates a mouth-watering quality that cleanses the palate and makes you want another sip. This type of acidity is crucial for riesling's food-pairing versatility and ageing potential, as it prevents the wine from feeling flat or heavy. The term 'racy' suggests the acidity is well-integrated and lively rather than harsh or aggressive, contributing to the wine's overall elegance and drinkability.
