Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

This is the style of wine that this maker’s most famous for, a Germanic, sweeter riesling style with perfectly balanced acidity. It’s built to age and just starting to strut its stuff with a few years in bottle. The ‘04 museum release, for instance, and was rated 2nd best riesling in Australia from 50 of the country’s best in 2016. Obviously, cellar age will reward. Here's a little tip from us, open this one with a bit of spicy food (Thai, Sri Lankan, Indonesian, Malay) and the wine comes alive! Honestly, even if you don't believe in food pairing with wine, give this a crack, both the wine and the food a genuinely made better - if that's possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Riesling follows a Germanic style with balanced sweetness and acidity, which contrasts with the typically bone-dry Australian Rieslings from regions like Clare Valley or Eden Valley. The sweeter profile allows the honeysuckle and apricot flavours to shine while maintaining the crisp acidity that Riesling is famous for. This style is particularly well-suited to the cooler Pemberton climate, which allows for slower ripening and better retention of natural acidity.

Given that this wine is already showing beautifully after a few years in bottle and the producer's 2004 vintage was still performing exceptionally in 2016, this 2021 has excellent aging potential of 10-15 years or more. Riesling's natural acidity acts as a preservative, allowing the wine to develop complex petrol and honey notes over time while maintaining freshness. The Germanic style with residual sugar provides additional structure for long-term cellaring.

The wine's residual sweetness acts as a cooling agent against spicy heat, while the bright acidity cuts through rich, oily dishes common in Thai, Sri Lankan, and Indonesian cuisines. Riesling's natural affinity for spice comes from its ability to complement rather than compete with complex flavour profiles. The orange blossom and honeysuckle notes in this wine particularly harmonise with aromatic spices like lemongrass, ginger, and chilli.

The textural style indicates this Riesling has more weight and mouthfeel than typical crisp, mineral-driven examples. This likely comes from extended lees contact, partial malolactic fermentation, or specific winemaking techniques that add richness and complexity. Combined with the light-bodied palate weight, you get a wine that feels substantial without being heavy, creating an elegant drinking experience that showcases Pemberton's unique terroir.

Pemberton's cool climate and unique terroir make it an excellent region for Riesling, though it's less famous than traditional Australian Riesling regions. The area's maritime influence and higher rainfall create ideal conditions for the slow ripening that Germanic-style Rieslings require. This allows for the development of complex aromatics like orange blossom while retaining the natural acidity that makes Riesling so food-friendly and age-worthy.
