A giant of the Margaret River wine scene (though they produce wines from all over WA - case in point) who you will be sure to recognise. Piercing green apple and clementine with bristly, finger lime acidity.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

A beauty from Mount Barker - this is complex, intricate, nervy riesling that gives us some insight into why the grape is so adored by wine pros the world over. It has become a little passé in wine circles to heap praise on riesling as a varietal, but I'll just have to beg for forgiveness in this instance, because I can't help myself. As pure an expression of fruit there is - free run juice from hand picked, whole cluster. Regionally typical in its expressiveness, this is flashy gear; floral and citrus-come-tropical fruits that ride an energetic, mineral wave through a laser-like finish. New to us, and we don't have too much of this to splash about, so this is a get in quick kinda' deal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mount Barker sits in the cool-climate Great Southern region of Western Australia, where the maritime influence and granite soils create ideal conditions for riesling. The region's diurnal temperature variation allows grapes to retain natural acidity while developing complex aromatics, resulting in wines with the mineral backbone and citrus precision that this bottle exemplifies. This terroir produces rieslings that rival Germany's finest expressions while maintaining a distinctly Australian character.

Riesling is revered by sommeliers and winemakers because it's one of the most transparent varieties - it faithfully reflects its terroir without masking from oak or heavy winemaking intervention. The grape's natural high acidity acts as a preservative, allowing complex flavours to develop over decades while maintaining freshness. This Mount Barker example showcases riesling's ability to balance intense aromatics with mineral precision, demonstrating why it's considered the ultimate food wine.

Free run juice is the premium liquid that flows naturally from grapes under their own weight, before any pressing occurs - it's the purest, most delicate expression of the fruit. Combined with hand picking and whole cluster handling, this gentle approach preserves the grape's natural aromatics and prevents extraction of harsh tannins or bitter compounds. This meticulous process explains the wine's 'laser-like finish' and complex, intricate character that sets it apart from mass-produced alternatives.

Serve this Mount Barker riesling well-chilled at 8-10°C to highlight its mineral backbone and citrus precision. The wine's light body and high acidity make it perfect with spicy Asian cuisine, fresh seafood, or creamy cheeses where its natural acidity cuts through richness. Consider decanting young rieslings like this 2021 for 15-20 minutes to allow the floral and tropical notes to fully express themselves.

Quality rieslings like this Mount Barker expression are built for cellaring, with their high natural acidity acting as a preservative. Over the next 5-10 years, the primary citrus and floral notes will evolve into more complex honey, petrol, and mineral characteristics that riesling lovers prize. However, given its current 'flashy' aromatics and energetic character, it's also drinking beautifully now - the choice between immediate pleasure and long-term complexity is yours.
