Why do we love this wine?

Sous la Roche - literally "under the rock" - sits directly beneath the tree line of the domaine's vineyards, on a chalk-rich site so spare in topsoil that the vines have no choice but to dig deep and work hard. That struggle shows up beautifully in the glass. More structure than you'd expect, a subtle mineral tension from the active limestone composition, and an elegance and length that sits comfortably alongside white Burgundies from far more famous villages at far higher prices. Fermented with minimal new oak to keep everything focused and pure. The result is a Chardonnay that's refined, precise and quietly compelling - the kind of wine that makes you lean in rather than sit back.

Frequently Asked Questions

Santenay sits at the southern end of the Côte de Beaune, where the limestone soils and slightly warmer climate produce Chardonnays with more immediate richness and body compared to the mineral austerity of Chablis or the elegance of Meursault. The 'Sous La Roche' vineyard name hints at the rocky, well-drained terroir that gives this wine its distinctive mineral backbone while allowing the fruit to develop generous white peach flavours. This represents exceptional value in Burgundy, offering premier cru quality at village-level pricing.

René Lequin-Colin represents the artisanal heart of Burgundy - a small family domaine that has been quietly crafting exceptional wines for generations without the marketing fanfare of larger houses. These boutique producers often own prime vineyard sites passed down through families, allowing them to express terroir with an intimacy impossible at commercial scale. Their limited production means each bottle receives individual attention, from hand-harvesting to careful barrel selection, resulting in wines that truly capture the essence of their specific plots.

Serve this wine slightly warmer than typical whites - around 12-14°C - to allow its creamy, full-bodied character to shine without masking the mineral complexity. The richness pairs beautifully with dishes that complement rather than compete with its texture: think roasted chicken with herbs, lobster thermidor, or aged hard cheeses like Comté. Decanting 30 minutes before serving can help integrate the wine's components and reveal more of those white peach aromatics.

The 2023 vintage in Burgundy was marked by challenging weather that ultimately rewarded careful producers with wines of exceptional concentration and balance. This young Chardonnay is drinking beautifully now, showing vibrant fruit and mineral precision, but will develop additional complexity over the next 5-7 years as the creamy textures integrate further with the minerality. The combination of vintage freshness and Santenay's naturally approachable style makes this perfect for both immediate enjoyment and short-term cellaring.

The minerality in this Santenay comes from the Jurassic limestone and marl soils that define Burgundy's Côte d'Or, where ancient seabeds create the perfect drainage and mineral uptake for Chardonnay vines. This geological foundation, combined with the 'Sous La Roche' vineyard's rocky subsoil, imparts a distinctive chalky, almost saline quality that balances the wine's rich fruit and creamy texture. It's this marriage of mineral precision with generous fruit that makes Burgundian Chardonnay the global benchmark for the variety.
