Aligoté is Burgundy's best kept secret. And when it comes from vines planted in 1936 in the commune of Meursault - one of the most celebrated white wine addresses on earth - it NEEDS to be kept a secret. We're going to need you all to keep this one on the down low... If you love Chardonnay, you'll find plenty to love here. If you're partial to a richer, more textural Albariño, same story.

Why do we love this wine?

If you know your Burgundy well, you already know what vines of this age on clay soils in Meursault are capable of producing. Nearly 90 years of vine age on a tiny 0.9 hectare plot. Aged in older barrels for up to 16 months without a drop of new oak to get in the way. The result is aligoté of remarkable depth and character - luminous yellow in the glass, with lime zest and fresh citrus on the nose and a tonic, dynamic palate that keeps things lively and alive from the very first sip. This is one of planet earth's greatest white wine styles from one of its greatest addresses. Whether you're discovering it for the first time or returning to an old favourite - what an opportunity.

Frequently Asked Questions

While Chardonnay dominates Burgundy's white wine reputation, Aligoté offers a refreshing alternative with its naturally higher acidity and more mineral-driven character. This René Lequin-Colin expression showcases the grape's ability to reflect Burgundy's limestone-rich soils through its slate notes, while maintaining the citrus brightness that makes Aligoté perfect for aperitifs or pairing with oysters and seafood.

Serve this wine well-chilled at 8-10°C to highlight its crisp citrus and pear flavours while allowing the textural elements to develop on the palate. The medium body and slate minerality make it excellent with fresh goat cheese, grilled fish, or classic French preparations like escargot. Consider decanting briefly if you want to emphasise the textural qualities that distinguish this from simpler Aligotés.

The textural style indicates this Aligoté has more weight and mouthfeel complexity than typical examples of the variety. Rather than being purely crisp and light, René Lequin-Colin has crafted a wine with substance that coats the palate, likely through careful lees contact or gentle extraction techniques. This approach bridges the gap between Aligoté's natural freshness and the more substantial whites Burgundy is famous for.

The 90-point staff rating reflects this Aligoté's exceptional quality within its category, showcasing how skilled producers like René Lequin-Colin can elevate this often-overlooked Burgundian grape. The combination of classic citrus and pear fruit with distinctive slate minerality, plus the textural complexity, demonstrates winemaking that honours both the variety's character and Burgundy's terroir expression.

The 2023 vintage in Burgundy produced wines with excellent freshness and mineral clarity, particularly beneficial for Aligoté which thrives in cooler conditions. This vintage's natural acidity preservation enhances the citrus and slate characteristics while maintaining the textural elements that make this wine special. The combination of René Lequin-Colin's expertise with 2023's favourable conditions creates an Aligoté that represents both the vintage and the producer's style beautifully.
