Albariño is hard not to love, and this is an excellent ambassador of the grape. Juicy pear, bright acid and a lick of salinity: all you need is fresh seafood and a summer's day.

Why do we love this wine?

That's right. This humble bottle of wine won the first prize at an Albariño festival judged by winemakers and experts from the famed Galicia region. It's no small honour, and it's certainly no small wine. This albariño, from the Rías Baixas subregion of Condado de Tea is named after the Puerta Santa, or “Holy Door” which is the most important access to Santiago de Compostela’s Cathedral. A mythical and special place - it’s not only the end of the famous Camino trail, but also the homeland of the country’s best white wine (made from albariño) and seafood - particularly shellfish. It’s getting into rich territory, with notes of honeysuckle and a great texture - so don’t be afraid to sauté those razor clams in heaps of butter with freshly chopped chives to compliment the subtle earthiness of the wine.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine won first prize at an Albariño festival judged by winemakers and experts from Galicia, which is extraordinary recognition in the grape's homeland. Unlike many Spanish whites that focus purely on freshness, this Albariño from the Condado de Tea subregion develops richer, more textural qualities with honeysuckle notes. The medium-bodied weight and earthy undertones make it more complex than typical coastal Rías Baixas expressions, bridging the gap between crisp seaside wines and more substantial inland styles.

Condado de Tea is an inland subregion of Rías Baixas that produces distinctly different Albariño compared to the coastal areas. The slightly warmer, more continental climate and granite soils create wines with greater texture and weight, as evidenced by this wine's medium body and honeysuckle richness. This terroir allows Albariño to develop more complex flavours while maintaining the grape's characteristic freshness, making it ideal for richer seafood preparations rather than just simple shellfish.

The wine's medium body and textural qualities make it perfect for richer seafood preparations like butter-sautéed razor clams with chives, as suggested by its Galician heritage. The honeysuckle and pear notes complement creamy sauces and roasted fish, while the subtle earthiness pairs beautifully with mushroom risottos or aged cheeses. Unlike lighter Albariños that suit raw oysters, this wine's weight can handle more substantial dishes including roast chicken or pork with fruit-based sauces.

The 2022 vintage captures Albariño at an ideal drinking window, showing the grape's ability to develop complexity while maintaining freshness. This vintage demonstrates how quality Albariño can evolve beyond simple citrus notes to reveal honeysuckle and textural depth. The wine's current medium-bodied profile suggests it's reached optimal maturity for enjoying the full spectrum of flavours, from bright citrus and pear to the more developed honeysuckle characteristics that distinguish exceptional Albariño.

A 90-point staff rating from Tully indicates this Albariño punches well above its weight class, especially considering it won recognition at a prestigious Galician festival. This score reflects the wine's successful balance of traditional Albariño freshness with the added complexity and texture that makes it stand out. Staff picks at this level typically indicate wines that offer exceptional value and drinking pleasure, suggesting this bottle delivers premium Rías Baixas quality at an accessible price point.
