Dave Powell's a hands-down Barossa legend (and made Torbreck what it is). When someone with that pedigree makes aged Eden riesling, you know you're in for something special. This wine shows us exactly why aged Eden riesling has such a devoted following.

Why do we love this wine?

Pale straw in the glass, with lime, lemon butter and the beginning of that glorious oily toast and kerosene complexity that serious riesling lovers absolutely live for. The palate is textural and rounded - citrus, wet steel and spice running through a long, tightly wound finish that keeps revealing itself sip after sip. Dry, crisp and completely compelling. We just can't put the glass down when it's full of this stuff!

Frequently Asked Questions

Eden Valley's high altitude and cool climate create ideal conditions for developing the distinctive petrol and kerosene notes that serious Riesling enthusiasts treasure. This 2019 vintage showcases the region's ability to produce full-bodied Rieslings with exceptional textural complexity, moving beyond the typical light, crisp style to deliver something more substantial and age-worthy. The combination of citrus freshness with emerging oily, toasty characteristics demonstrates the wine's evolution and the terroir's unique expression.

Serve this Riesling well-chilled at 8-10°C to highlight its crisp acidity and allow the complex aromatics to unfold gradually. The full-bodied nature means it can handle slightly warmer serving temperatures than lighter Rieslings, which will enhance the textural elements and spice notes. Use a tulip-shaped white wine glass to concentrate the developing petrol and citrus aromas, and allow the wine to breathe for 10-15 minutes after opening to fully appreciate its evolving complexity.

The full-bodied texture and wet steel minerality make this an excellent match for rich seafood dishes like lobster thermidor or pan-seared scallops with butter sauce. The wine's acidity cuts through creamy textures while its weight complements substantial dishes, making it perfect for Asian cuisine with complex spice profiles or German-inspired pork dishes. The developing kerosene notes also pair beautifully with aged cheeses and charcuterie, creating sophisticated flavour bridges.

While absolutely delicious now, this 2019 is just beginning to show the classic petrol and toast complexity that develops with age in quality Rieslings. Eden Valley Rieslings are renowned for their cellaring potential, often improving for 10-15 years, developing deeper honeyed notes and more pronounced mineral characteristics. The tight, wound finish suggests there's much more to come, so consider enjoying one bottle now and cellaring others to experience the wine's full evolution.

Single vineyard designation means all grapes come from one specific site, allowing the winemaker to capture the unique terroir characteristics of that particular location within Eden Valley. This focused approach typically results in more distinctive and complex flavour profiles compared to regional blends, as the wine expresses the specific soil, aspect, and microclimate of the Eckert vineyard. Powell & Son's boutique approach ensures careful attention to every detail, from vine to bottle, resulting in a wine that truly reflects its place of origin.
