Why do we love this wine?

The palate is beautifully textured, thanks to a good chunk of time on lees in barrel, creating layers of stone fruit and nougat that give it serious presence. Persistent phenolics provide length and structure, elevating this well beyond your typical easy-drinking pinot gris into something with genuine complexity and staying power. This is pinot gris with body, character and enough texture to make you pay attention. The kind that pairs brilliantly with food but drinks just as well on its own when you want something with a bit more grunt than your average white.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tasmania's cool maritime climate creates ideal conditions for Pinot Gris, allowing the grapes to retain natural acidity while developing complex flavours. The island's pristine environment and longer growing season produce wines with exceptional balance between the stone fruit characteristics and spicy complexity. This results in a more elegant, food-friendly style compared to warmer climate versions that can become overly rich or lose their refreshing qualities.

Serve chilled at 8-10°C to highlight the wine's textural qualities and aromatic complexity. The medium body means it can handle slightly warmer serving temperatures than lighter whites, which will enhance the peach and pear flavours while maintaining the spicy finish. Decanting isn't necessary, but allowing it to breathe for 10-15 minutes after opening will help the wine express its full character.

The combination of stone fruit sweetness and spicy complexity makes this wine incredibly versatile with food. Try it with Asian cuisine like Thai green curry or Vietnamese pork dishes where the spice notes complement aromatic herbs. The peach and pear characteristics also pair beautifully with roasted pork belly, creamy pasta dishes, or aged cheeses like gruyere where the wine's texture can match the richness.

A textural style indicates this wine has been crafted to emphasise mouthfeel and weight rather than just bright, crisp acidity. This often involves techniques like lees stirring, partial malolactic fermentation, or extended skin contact that create a more substantial, almost creamy sensation on the palate. The result is a wine that feels more substantial and complex, with the fruit flavours integrated into a silky, engaging texture that lingers pleasantly.

While Pinot Gris is typically enjoyed young to capture its fresh fruit character, quality Tasmanian examples like this can develop beautifully over 3-5 years. The wine's medium body and textural style suggest it has the structure to evolve, with the peach and pear notes becoming more honeyed while the spice elements integrate further. However, it will also be delicious now, so the choice depends on whether you prefer vibrant fruit or more complex, developed flavours.
