Why do we love this wine?

Although this producer is based in the Hunter Valley, this particular range explores alternative grape varieties and the regions in which they thrive. It follows naturally that they would decide to produce a pinot grigio from the home of the grape in Australia, the King Valley. Following an influx of Italian immigration to the area a generation or two ago, the King has become a haven for Italian native grapes, the soil, the climate and the local know-how are all expressed beautifully in this zippy, refreshing wine. Citrusy, zesty acid with lashings of under-ripe pear and crunchy green apple, the finish of this wine is lengthy yet refreshing, like apple sherbet.

Frequently Asked Questions

The King Valley's suitability for Pinot Grigio stems from its unique combination of Italian heritage and Australian terroir. Following Italian immigration generations ago, the region developed specialised knowledge in cultivating Italian grape varieties, with the local soil and climate conditions proving remarkably similar to those found in northern Italy. This cultural and agricultural legacy, combined with the valley's cool climate and well-draining soils, creates the perfect environment for producing authentic, high-quality Pinot Grigio that rivals its European counterparts.

This Pinot Grigio showcases the classic hallmarks of cool-climate winemaking with its vibrant citrusy acidity and crisp fruit expression. The combination of under-ripe pear and crunchy green apple creates a refreshing palate that's enhanced by the wine's zippy, sherbet-like finish. This flavour profile is characteristic of well-made Pinot Grigio, where the grape's natural acidity is preserved through careful winemaking, resulting in a wine that's both food-friendly and incredibly refreshing on its own.

While the producer is traditionally based in the Hunter Valley, known for Semillon and Shiraz, this wine represents their exploration of alternative varieties in regions where they naturally excel. Rather than forcing Italian grapes to adapt to Hunter Valley conditions, they've strategically sourced from King Valley where Pinot Grigio thrives. This approach demonstrates modern Australian winemaking philosophy - matching grape varieties to their optimal growing conditions rather than being constrained by a single regional identity.

The apple sherbet finish is a hallmark of well-crafted Pinot Grigio, indicating excellent acid balance and clean winemaking techniques. This refreshing, lengthy finish suggests the grapes were harvested at optimal ripeness with natural acidity intact, and that fermentation was carefully controlled to preserve the wine's fresh fruit character. A clean, persistent finish like this is often found in premium examples of the variety, where the wine's natural vibrancy isn't masked by heavy-handed winemaking interventions.

As a 2024 vintage light-bodied Pinot Grigio with fresh, citrusy characteristics, this wine is designed for immediate enjoyment rather than long-term cellaring. Pinot Grigio's appeal lies in its youthful vibrancy, crisp acidity, and bright fruit flavours, which are at their peak within 2-3 years of vintage. The wine's zippy, refreshing style and apple sherbet finish are best appreciated while these characteristics remain prominent, making it perfect for current consumption alongside seafood, light pasta dishes, or as a refreshing aperitif.
