If you want great wine, you go to Ben Riggs. That's what most of McLaren Vale and surrounds would tell you, too. We pleaded for a small parcel of chardy, and we weren't disappointed with the result.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

There's a very limited amount of chardy floating around the Adelaide Hills at the moment (and, in a lot of Australia for that matter), so we weren't holding our breath when we asked our Mofo favourite producer Mr Riggs for some. Sure enough, he managed to wrangle a small parcel to deliver us this unbelievably good drop. Saline and citrus driven, with a smattering of vanilla and nuts from some time in seasoned oak. You'd be surprised at how easily this drinks now, but will guarantee a few years of pleasure-filled drinking to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2024 vintage has been particularly challenging for Chardonnay production across Australia, with the Adelaide Hills being especially affected by weather conditions that significantly reduced yields. This scarcity has made quality parcels like this one extremely sought after, as many producers simply don't have enough fruit to make their usual quantities. The limited availability actually works in favour of quality, as winemakers can be more selective with the fruit they do have.

The use of seasoned oak rather than new oak is a deliberate choice that allows the natural Adelaide Hills fruit character to shine through while adding subtle complexity. Seasoned oak barrels have been used multiple times, so they impart gentle vanilla and nutty notes without overwhelming the wine's inherent saline and citrus qualities. This approach is becoming increasingly popular among thoughtful winemakers who want to enhance rather than mask their fruit.

The saline quality comes from the unique terroir of the Adelaide Hills, where ancient soils and the region's elevation create distinctive mineral expressions in the wines. This salinity isn't added - it's a natural characteristic that develops from the interaction between the Chardonnay vines and the specific soil composition. It's what gives Adelaide Hills Chardonnay its distinctive edge and makes it stand out from other Australian regions.

This Chardonnay is beautifully balanced to offer immediate pleasure while having the structure to develop over several years. The 2024 vintage shows remarkable approachability now, with its citrus drive and medium body making it perfect for current consumption. However, the quality of the fruit and careful oak integration suggest it will reward those patient enough to cellar it for 3-5 years, developing more complex honeyed and nutty characteristics.

The saline and citrus-driven profile makes this wine incredibly food-friendly, particularly with seafood dishes where the natural salinity creates a seamless bridge. The vanilla and nutty oak notes complement roasted chicken or pork beautifully, while the medium body won't overpower lighter dishes like grilled fish or creamy pasta. The wine's natural acidity also makes it excellent with rich, buttery sauces or aged cheeses.
