If you want great wine, you go to Ben Riggs. That's what most of McLaren Vale and surrounds would tell you, too. We pleaded for a small parcel of chardy, and we weren't disappointed with the result.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

There's a very limited amount of chardy floating around the Adelaide Hills at the moment (and, in a lot of Australia for that matter), so we weren't holding our breath when we asked our mofo favourite producer Mr Riggs for some. Sure enough, he managed to wrangle a small parcel to deliver us this unbelievably good drop. Saline and citrus driven, with a smattering of vanilla and nuts from some time in seasoned oak. You'd be surprised at how easily this drinks now, but will guarantee a few years of pleasure-filled drinking to come.

Stylish and inviting, showing ripe stone fruit, oatmeal, nougat, lemon peel and roasted cashew notes, followed by a finely flowing palate that's succulent and creamy. Beautifully framed by well-pitched acidity. Structured and expansive. At its best: now to 2028.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2022 vintage saw significantly reduced Chardonnay yields across the Adelaide Hills and much of Australia due to challenging weather conditions. This scarcity has made quality examples like Mr Riggs' Idle Lane particularly sought after. The limited production means this wine represents both exceptional value and rarity - a combination that serious Chardonnay collectors understand well.

The seasoned oak used here provides subtle vanilla and nutty complexity without overwhelming the fruit's natural character. Unlike new oak which can dominate, seasoned barrels allow the Adelaide Hills' signature saline minerality and citrus brightness to shine through. This balanced approach is what separates premium Australian Chardonnay from heavily oaked commercial styles.

With 95 points from Wine Showcase and multiple gold medals, this wine punches well above its weight class. The Adelaide Hills region is renowned for producing some of Australia's most elegant Chardonnays, rivalling Margaret River and Tasmania. Mr Riggs' reputation as a five red star Halliday winery ensures this bottle delivers the complexity and finesse typically found in wines costing significantly more.

While surprisingly approachable now with its fresh citrus and tropical fruit flavours, this wine has the structure and acidity to reward patient cellaring. The 2022 vintage's natural acidity and quality oak integration suggest 5-7 years of positive development ahead. Early drinking reveals the wine's vibrant fruit character, while cellaring will develop more complex honeyed and nutty tertiary flavours.

The wine's saline minerality and citrus drive make it exceptional with fresh seafood, particularly oysters, crab, and grilled fish. The subtle oak and medium body also complement roasted chicken, creamy pasta dishes, and aged hard cheeses. The tropical fruit notes create beautiful harmony with Southeast Asian cuisine, especially dishes featuring coconut, lemongrass, and fresh herbs.
