The producers of this wine have put a lot of thought in, so you don't have to. Chardonnays like this are all about balance, and there is *a lot* to balance here: Oak richness, ripe stone fruit and vibrant acidity, not to mention wonderful floral and citrus notes. But as we said, they've put all the thought in - you just enjoy yourself.

Why do we love this wine?

This is a great example of letting the grape variety shine and it took some real care in the vineyard and the winery to accomplish. Picked in the cool of the early morning hours then racked to tank with some solids added for fermentation. The juice is separated with the majority placed in French oak to ferment and the rest kept to committed to tank. Post fermentation, bâtonnage is introduced to bring an extra textural element and build flavour. The result is a quintessential Margaret River chardonnay with richness, complexity and a lengthy, but not flabby, finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Margaret River's unique maritime climate and gravelly soils create ideal conditions for producing elegant, complex Chardonnays that balance richness with finesse. This wine showcases the region's signature style through careful vineyard management and a split fermentation approach - part in French oak, part in tank - which allows the natural grape character to shine while adding textural complexity. The result is a wine that avoids the overly buttery or oaky characteristics sometimes found in other Australian regions.

Harvesting grapes in the cool early morning hours is crucial for preserving the delicate aromatics and natural acidity that make great Chardonnay. When grapes are picked in cooler temperatures, they retain more of their fresh, vibrant flavours and avoid the oxidation that can occur with warm-weather harvesting. This careful timing contributes directly to the wine's bright lemon zest character and helps maintain the crisp backbone that balances the rich, tropical fruit flavours.

Bâtonnage is the French technique of stirring the wine's lees (dead yeast cells) during ageing, which adds creamy texture and complexity without relying solely on oak. This process helps develop the wine's cashew-like richness and creates a more substantial mouthfeel that complements the tropical fruit flavours. It's a hallmark of quality Chardonnay production that bridges the gap between crisp, mineral styles and overly heavy, oaked versions.

Serve this wine slightly chilled at 10-12°C to allow its complex flavours to unfold properly - too cold and you'll miss the tropical fruit and cashew notes, too warm and it may taste flabby. The full-bodied nature and French oak influence make it perfect for pairing with richer dishes like roasted chicken, creamy seafood pasta, or aged hard cheeses. Decanting isn't necessary, but allowing it to breathe in the glass for 10-15 minutes will help the wine open up.

As a 2023 vintage, this Chardonnay is drinking beautifully now while still showing youthful vibrancy and fresh fruit character. Quality Margaret River Chardonnays like this typically develop additional complexity over 3-5 years, with the lemon zest evolving into more honeyed notes while maintaining the wine's structural integrity. The careful winemaking approach with French oak and lees stirring suggests this wine has the backbone to age gracefully, though it's equally enjoyable in its current expressive state.
