Ripe stone fruit meets bright natural acidity (and a bit of clever work in the winery) to create a balanced, purposeful wine that overdelivers at every possible turn. It's not the dark yellow, flabby chardonnays of your parents' era - this is modern Australian chardonnay, right where you want it.

Why do we love this wine?

Because of the altitude and natural cool-climate of the King/Alpine Valleys, you don't have to worry about these wines being lively - that natural acidy is built into the very core of the fruit from which this wine is made. There's not a lot we can say about this wine that isn't evident from the colour of the thing. Bright, fruit forward, zippy and rich in all the right places. Versatile, vivacious and very, very, very east to drink.

Frequently Asked Questions

The high altitude and cool climate of the Alpine & King Valleys naturally preserves bright acidity in the grapes, creating a wine with exceptional liveliness and freshness. This contrasts with warmer climate Chardonnays that often rely on winemaking techniques to maintain balance. The natural acidity acts as the wine's backbone, allowing the rich, full-bodied character to shine without becoming heavy or cloying.

Hand-picking allows for selective harvesting of only the best grapes, ensuring optimal ripeness and condition before fermentation begins. This boutique approach means damaged or underripe fruit is left behind, resulting in cleaner flavours and better concentration. The gentle handling also prevents premature oxidation and maintains the bright, zippy character that defines this Chardonnay's personality.

The wine's rich texture and bright acidity make it perfect for creamy dishes like lobster thermidor or chicken in white wine sauce. The lemon zest and melon notes complement seafood beautifully, while the full body can stand up to richer preparations. Try it with roasted pork belly, aged cheeses, or even spicy Asian cuisine where the acidity cuts through heat and richness.

As a 2024 vintage with vibrant fruit-forward character, this Chardonnay is designed for immediate enjoyment while the bright flavours are at their peak. The natural acidity provides good structure for short-term cellaring of 2-3 years, but the wine's zippy, vivacious style suggests it's best consumed young. The melon and lemon zest notes will be most pronounced in its youth.

Boutique producers like Mont St Lunara focus on small-batch winemaking with hands-on attention to detail that larger operations can't match. Their 90-point rating reflects this commitment to quality over quantity, allowing for experimentation and refinement of their craft. The Alpine & King Valleys location shows their dedication to finding the perfect terroir for their varietals, resulting in wines with distinct regional character and personality.
