The King and Alpine Valleys are among Australia's finest spots for pinot gris, and this one nails exactly what the variety should be in this country. You're getting texture and freshness working together beautifully - pear and melon richness rather than sharp citrus, with enough weight to handle roast chook, risotto or whatever you're throwing at it.

Why do we love this wine?

Ripe pear and honeydew dominate, with a subtle spice note and creamy texture that gives it real presence in the glass. There's freshness keeping everything lifted, but it's got enough weight and richness to handle a good feed. The finish is clean and moreish - not bone dry, not sweet, just sitting in that spot where you reach for another glass without thinking about it. At this price, it's not just good value, it's genuinely delicious drinking and it's ticking all the gris boxes. Great stuff.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Monarca sits beautifully between the crisp, mineral-driven Pinot Gris from Alsace and the richer Pinot Grigio styles from Italy. The creamy texture and substantial weight give it more presence than many Australian examples, while the Alpine & King Valleys' cool climate preserves the essential freshness. It's that perfect balance of richness and lift that makes it so moreish.

Serve well-chilled at 8-10°C to highlight the fresh pear and honeydew flavours while maintaining that lovely creamy texture. The wine's weight and richness mean it can handle heartier dishes than typical light whites - think roasted chicken, creamy pasta, or even mild curries. Its clean finish makes it equally enjoyable as an aperitif or throughout a meal.

As a 2025 vintage, this is incredibly fresh and represents the current harvest from the Alpine & King Valleys. Pinot Gris is typically enjoyed young to capture its vibrant fruit character and crisp acidity. This timing means you're getting the wine at its peak expression of those ripe pear and honeydew flavours, with all the natural freshness intact.

The triple 90-point ratings for 'Killer Vintage', 'Dangerous Value', and 'Boutique Producer' reflect Monarca's ability to craft exceptional Pinot Gris that punches well above its price point. Small producers like Monarca often have the flexibility to focus on quality over quantity, resulting in wines with genuine character and regional expression that larger operations struggle to match.

The wine's creamy texture and subtle spice notes make it brilliant with dishes that have similar weight and complexity. Think pan-fried fish with butter sauce, risotto with mushrooms, or even Thai green curry where the wine's richness can stand up to the coconut milk. The clean, moreish finish means it won't compete with delicate flavours but has enough presence for robust preparations.
