Why do we love this wine?

Metzer Family Wines started back in 2006 with a focus on minimal intervention, and they’ve stuck to their guns and become examples in their field. If you ask us, their chenin blancs are what you want to come to the party for: letting the complexities and intrigue of this variety shine with each expression.

Metzer’s Maritime chenin comes from a bush vine block that was planted back in the ‘80’s only four kms from False Bay. Fermentation took place in seasoned French oak, followed by nine months settled on lees. As always, they don’t look to strip the wine before going to bottle, so you can expect that some of the fine lees will still be mingling in each bottle, developing complexity with every day. Look for pear, peach and lemon on the nose, brilliant mineral acidity on the palate and a touch of spice and orange blossom on the finish. You’ll hear us sing our praises about this one for years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Maritime's proximity to False Bay - just 4km away - creates a unique coastal influence that's rare for South African chenin blanc. This maritime climate moderates temperatures and adds mineral complexity through ocean breezes, while the old bush vines from the 1980s contribute concentrated flavours and natural acidity. The combination of seasoned French oak fermentation and extended lees contact creates a textural wine that showcases chenin blanc's ability to express terroir rather than just varietal character.

Metzer deliberately avoids heavy filtration to preserve the wine's natural complexity and texture. The fine lees you see are actually beneficial - they continue developing flavours and mouthfeel as the wine ages in bottle. This minimal intervention approach is becoming increasingly recognised among quality producers as it maintains the wine's authentic character. Simply decant if you prefer a clear pour, though many wine enthusiasts appreciate the rustic, unfiltered style.

These exceptional scores from Winemag and Tim Atkin place this chenin blanc in the top tier of South African whites. Such high ratings typically indicate outstanding balance, complexity, and ageing potential - qualities that chenin blanc achieves when grown in optimal sites with careful winemaking. The scores reflect not just immediate drinking pleasure but the wine's ability to develop further complexity over 5-8 years, making it both a current indulgence and a cellar-worthy investment.

The medium-bodied texture and mineral backbone make this chenin blanc incredibly food-friendly, particularly with dishes that can match its complexity. Try it with roasted chicken with herbs, grilled fish with citrus, or creamy pasta dishes where the wine's acidity cuts through richness. The orange blossom and spice notes also complement Asian cuisine beautifully, while the textural weight can handle stronger cheeses like aged goat's cheese or camembert.

Quality chenin blanc like this Maritime can develop beautifully for 8-12 years when properly stored. The 2019 is currently showing youthful fruit character, but the mineral backbone and textural complexity suggest it will evolve into more honeyed, waxy notes over time. The lees contact and French oak provide structure for long-term ageing, while chenin blanc's natural acidity acts as a preservative. Peak drinking will likely be 2024-2030, though it's delicious now for those who prefer brighter fruit expression.
