This is Aussie chardy at its absolute best. Handpicked from the most expressive pockets of a low-yielding single site. It’s all elegance, but with drive - zesty citrus, fine-grained oak and that unmistakable mineral kick that only great vineyards can deliver. Serious wine, serious flavour.

Why do we love this wine?

Straight out the gates, the nose is a delicate wash of white florals, lime zest and oak spice. Then comes the palate; zesty lemon, yellow grapefruit, and crunchy white peach, all wrapped around a fine line of chalky limestone and carefully selected French oak. Made from handpicked fruit off gravelly, mineral-rich soils, this wine is precise and textural. Wild-fermented in French oak (30% new), it saw 9 months on lees to build complexity without sacrificing that electric freshness. It’s powerful and pure, with a tight acid backbone and a long, focused finish. Drink it now for a burst of tension and citrus, or cellar it a few years for added creaminess and depth. Either way, it’s a complete knockout.

Halliday Wine Companion

Halliday Wine Companion

Hand picked from a single block, whole-bunch pressed to puncheons, hogsheads and barriques (33% new) with partial mlf. A very bright colour. An equal amount of pink grapefruit and stone fruits. Some floral nuance, too. Great drive and intensity. Beautifully crafted and discreet, this flows effortlessly across the palate. Another top Medhurst chardonnay that will be age gracefully over the next four to six years if not longer.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Medhurst Chardonnay showcases the cooler-climate elegance of the Yarra Valley, emphasising mineral precision over tropical richness. The wild fermentation and 30% new French oak creates textural complexity while maintaining electric freshness - a hallmark of premium cool-climate Chardonnay. The gravelly, mineral-rich soils contribute to its distinctive chalky limestone backbone, setting it apart from warmer region styles that tend towards riper, more opulent fruit profiles.

The wild fermentation allows indigenous yeasts to develop complex flavours naturally, while 9 months on lees builds creamy texture without masking the wine's vibrant acidity. The careful use of 30% new French oak adds spice and structure without overwhelming the delicate fruit expression. This traditional approach, combined with handpicked fruit from a single vineyard, ensures every element works in harmony to create the wine's signature tension between power and elegance.

The wine's chalky minerality and citrus-driven profile make it exceptional with fresh seafood like oysters, scallops, or grilled fish with herb butter. The textural complexity from lees ageing pairs beautifully with creamy dishes such as lobster bisque or chicken in white wine sauce. The oak spice and full body can also handle richer preparations like roasted pork tenderloin or aged hard cheeses, while the bright acidity cuts through cream-based pasta dishes perfectly.

This Chardonnay offers two distinct drinking experiences depending on your preference. Drinking it now showcases its electric freshness, zesty citrus character, and mineral tension - perfect for those who love vibrant, precise wines. Cellaring for 3-5 years will develop greater creaminess and depth as the oak integrates further and the fruit evolves into more honeyed, nutty complexity. Premium Yarra Valley Chardonnays like this typically peak between 5-8 years from vintage.

James Halliday's 96-point score places this wine in the 'outstanding' category, representing exceptional quality that's rarely achieved. This rating, combined with Medhurst's Five Red Star winery status, indicates consistent excellence across their range. Such high scores for a 2023 vintage suggest the wine displays remarkable balance, complexity, and ageing potential despite its youth. The rating reflects not just immediate drinking pleasure, but the wine's potential to develop into something truly special over the coming years.
