Why do we love this wine?

I won’t lie, the first time I tried this wine I was sceptical. I had, in my head, what I imagined would be a flabby and past-its-best wine. Boy, could I have been more wrong? This is electric, exciting, exotic and bursting with life. A great contender for even some of the most polished Rhône white blends (from which this wine gains its inspiration). A firecracker in the mouth, you’ll be able to find all the classic ‘aged’ notes of honeycomb, almonds, toasted walnuts, and perhaps a bit of hay. But then it’s so much more, still showing fresh stone fruit and a citrus core that will not give up the ghost. I’ll proudly admit that this wine proved me wrong, and takes home the trophy.

What is a Black Market deal?

Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.

Frequently Asked Questions

Marsanne-based blends are renowned for their exceptional ageing potential, often improving for 10-15 years or more. The wine's natural acidity and textural components have allowed it to develop complex honeyed and nutty characteristics while maintaining its fresh stone fruit core. This demonstrates why Rhône-style white blends are considered some of the most age-worthy white wines in the world.

While Heathcote is famous for bold reds, its ancient Cambrian soils and continental climate create ideal conditions for structured white wines. The region's warm days and cool nights preserve acidity while developing flavour intensity. This terroir allows Marsanne blends to achieve the perfect balance between richness and freshness that makes them cellar-worthy.

Serve this wine slightly warmer than typical whites, around 12-14°C, to fully appreciate its textural complexity and honeyed notes. The medium body and spiced characteristics make it perfect with roasted poultry, creamy pasta dishes, or aged cheeses. Consider decanting it 30 minutes before serving to allow the mature flavours to fully express themselves.

This wine follows the Northern Rhône tradition of blending Marsanne with complementary varieties to create complexity and structure. Like famous French whites from Hermitage or Crozes-Hermitage, it combines stone fruit freshness with honeyed richness and spice. The Australian interpretation adds regional character while maintaining the classic profile that makes these blends so food-friendly and age-worthy.

At 11 years old, this wine is likely approaching its peak drinking window, though quality Marsanne blends can continue evolving for several more years. The balance between fresh fruit and developed honeyed characters suggests it's perfectly positioned now, but could develop even more tertiary complexity. Store it properly and it should maintain this excellent drinking condition for another 3-5 years.
