Talk about Aussie icons: this is up there with bright red budgie smugglers or a bag of wine clipped to a Hills Hoist (some professional advice: don’t clip your Leeuwin Estate Prelude Chardonnay to your clothes line).

Why do we love this wine?

The wines of Leeuwin Estate are among the best Australia has to offer. And that’s not being hyperbolic - read Mathew Jukes remarks below. Structurally this wine is perfect; shapely and round on the palate but with assured acid structure that ensures there is no flatness whatsoever. There is oceanic salinity - more sea-breezy than oyster shell - some nutmeg and vanilla bean, and nutty cashew paste on the back palate. The fruit profile plays in two worlds; steely citrus that’s typically cooler climate coupled with classically Margs tropical melons and over ripe pineapple. The wine builds on itself as it stretches out across the palate, the finish pushing beyond where you think it could possibly go. This is not a wine you simply want, this is a wine you need.

I genuinely feel that today’s Prelude would give early vintages Art Series a really good run for their money. If someone could kindly invent a time machine so that we can test this hypothesis, that would be very kind. Until then, please believe me that having tasted every vintage of Art Series back to 1983, I genuinely feel that Prelude is now of a standard for it to be thought of as not a second wine but of the main Estate Chardonnay at Leeuwin and Art Series can sit to its side as a limited release icon wine. 2021 Prelude is nothing short of superb, with layered, plush, classy fruit. There is amazing depth and purity here, and as I noted in my scribblings, it is ‘Grand-Vin-shaped’. I used to think I should squirrel away Prelude with starters before moving on to main course white wines. Those days are long gone – this is a superstar, and the value here is terrific.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Prelude Vineyards Chardonnay showcases Margaret River's unique dual personality - combining steely, citrus-driven minerality typical of cooler climates with the region's signature tropical fruit character of melons and overripe pineapple. The oceanic salinity adds a distinctive sea-breezy quality that reflects the vineyard's proximity to the Indian Ocean. This complexity, coupled with its exceptional structure and extended finish, elevates it far beyond standard Australian Chardonnay offerings.

The 97-point Halliday rating and inclusion in Matthew Jukes' Top 100 Australian Wines reflects the wine's exceptional structural integrity and flavour development. Critics particularly noted how the wine builds complexity across the palate, with layers of nutmeg, vanilla bean, and cashew paste complementing the fruit core. The perfect balance between richness and acidity, plus an extraordinarily long finish, demonstrates the winemaking excellence that Leeuwin Estate is renowned for.

Serve this wine slightly chilled at 10-12°C to allow its complex aromatics to fully express themselves. The full-bodied nature and nutty, tropical fruit profile make it ideal for rich seafood dishes like lobster thermidor, roasted chicken with herbs, or creamy mushroom risotto. The wine's oceanic salinity also pairs beautifully with fresh oysters or seared scallops, creating a harmonious coastal dining experience.

While this 2021 Chardonnay is drinking beautifully now, showing excellent integration of oak and fruit, it has the structure to develop further complexity over the next 5-7 years. The assured acid backbone and full-bodied nature suggest it will evolve gracefully, developing more honeyed and nutty characteristics while maintaining its vibrant fruit core. Peak drinking is likely between 2024-2029, though it may surprise with even greater longevity.

Margaret River's maritime climate, influenced by the Indian and Southern Oceans, creates perfect conditions for Chardonnay with both power and elegance. The region's gravelly soils provide excellent drainage while retaining enough moisture for consistent ripening. Cool ocean breezes moderate temperatures during the growing season, allowing for extended hang time that develops the complex flavour profile evident in this wine - from citrus minerality to tropical richness, all while maintaining crucial natural acidity.
