Ladbroke only make this wine in exceptional vintages so you won't get your hands on it every year. Lemons, limes and a touch of orange blossom are all carried by bracing minerality and a hint of jasmine tea.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

We were lucky enough to get our hands on this aged example with six years of maturity. Riesling might not be the first thing you think of with Coonawarra, but the climate and soil are actually perfect for developing intensity, crispness and ageability in the variety. When you have a single block of riesling on sandy loam that performs as well as this one does, you've gotta dive in. Open one now to experience the zest but save a bottle or two for down the road to see how it develops even further.

Frequently Asked Questions

While Coonawarra is famous for its red wines, the region's cool climate and unique terra rossa soils create ideal conditions for Riesling development. The temperature variations help preserve the variety's natural acidity while allowing for complex flavour development. This particular vineyard's sandy loam soil provides excellent drainage, which concentrates flavours and contributes to the wine's impressive ageability - something Riesling excels at when grown in the right conditions.

Six years of bottle age has transformed this Riesling from its youthful citrus-driven character into something more complex and textural. The herbaceous and lanolin notes you'll taste are classic signs of Riesling maturation, where the wine develops honeyed richness while maintaining its lime backbone. This ageing process has created layers of flavour that young Rieslings simply can't offer, making it a perfect example of why quality Riesling is considered one of the world's most age-worthy white wines.

A single block wine comes from grapes grown in one specific vineyard plot, rather than blending fruit from multiple sites. This approach allows the unique characteristics of that particular piece of land - its soil, drainage, and microclimate - to shine through in the wine. For this School House Block Riesling, it means you're tasting the pure expression of that sandy loam vineyard site, creating a wine with distinct personality and terroir-driven character that reflects its specific Coonawarra location.

Serve this textural Riesling slightly chilled at around 8-10°C to best appreciate its developed complexity. The cooler temperature will highlight the lime freshness while allowing the herbaceous and lanolin characters to emerge gradually as the wine warms in your glass. Given its light-bodied nature and aged character, it pairs beautifully with seafood, Asian cuisine, or can be enjoyed on its own as an aperitif where you can fully appreciate its evolved aromatics.

This 2018 Riesling is drinking beautifully now with its perfect balance of maturity and freshness, but quality Coonawarra Rieslings can continue developing for many more years. The wine's natural acidity and textural complexity suggest it has the structure to evolve further, potentially developing even more honeyed and petrol-like characteristics that aged Rieslings are prized for. If you have multiple bottles, try one now and cellar the rest for 2-3 more years to experience its continued evolution.
