Off-dry riesling is all about harmony, equating the natural acid and the sweetness. Who else would we trust with such a precarious balancing act? Grosset. Of course. This is bang-on! Rich and flavoursome but not overly sweet, with piercing acid and gorgeous texture. This is as good as it gets in Australia.

Why do we love this wine?

A darling of the Australian wine scene, Grosset is definitely in the upper echelon when it comes to riesling, producing some of the best examples in the country. They are truly benchmark wines that set the bar high for other producers to reach. Known for their trademark lifted floral notes, citrus fruit intensity and chalky minerality, Grosset rieslings deliver an ethereal drinking experience.

Mike Bennie

"Alea Vineyard, a distinct site for Grosset set on red loam over hard-red rock, was planted in 2000. Certified organic and biodynamic. Produced in an off-dry style. A moreish riesling with pitch-perfect sweetness and acidity, mouth-watering and fresh in its feel. Scents of green apple, kaffir lime leaf and lemon lozenges. Flavours combine with the crunch and sweetness of green apple with a good squeeze of tangy lime juice. Gentle fruit sweetness is abetted by cool, briny, lemony acidity and general air of freshness. Ultra appealing and yet with a sense of detail and minerally complexity. An outstanding release which should develop with interest with cellar time. 95 Points." - Mike Bennie, Halliday Wine Companion

Frequently Asked Questions

Clare Valley's unique terroir combines warm days with cool nights, creating perfect conditions for Riesling's signature acidity and aromatic intensity. The region's ancient soils contribute the chalky minerality that Grosset is renowned for, while the continental climate allows for slow, even ripening that preserves the delicate floral notes and citrus precision found in this Alea bottling.

The 2022 vintage benefited from ideal growing conditions in Clare Valley, producing Rieslings with exceptional balance and longevity potential. This particular wine's dual 95-point ratings from both Halliday Wine Companion and Huon Hooke suggest it's among the finest expressions of the vintage, showcasing the lifted aromatics and mineral complexity that define great Australian Riesling years.

The wine's grapefruit and lime intensity makes it superb with fresh seafood, particularly oysters, sashimi, or grilled fish with herbs. The jasmine florals and light body also complement spicy Asian cuisine beautifully, while the chalky minerality provides an elegant match for goat's cheese or light poultry dishes with citrus-based sauces.

Premium Clare Valley Rieslings like this Grosset can age gracefully for 10-15 years, developing honeyed complexity while retaining their core citrus character. Over time, the primary grapefruit and lime flavours will evolve into more nuanced stone fruit notes, while the jasmine aromatics integrate with emerging toast and petrol characteristics that mark a mature, world-class Riesling.

Serve this Riesling well-chilled at 8-10°C to showcase its crisp acidity and delicate aromatics. At this temperature, the jasmine florals will be most pronounced on the nose, while the grapefruit and lime flavours will provide refreshing intensity without overwhelming the wine's elegant mineral backbone that makes Grosset a benchmark producer.
