Why do we love this wine?

Welcoming back to our shores is the latest vintage the popular Etiqueta Verde (aka. Green Label) from Galician winery Granbazán.  A ‘best-in-class’ producer, famous for one variety - albariño. Hailing from the maritime vineyards of Rias Baixas, these are highly in-demand wines, not just in Spain, but across the globe. If albariño doesn’t look familiar to you, well, that’s because of its ridiculous popularity among those in the know. An offer on a wine this amazing (and scarce) disappears in a flash.

Albariño is famous for freshness and compatibility with seafood. The apt expression ‘what grows together, goes together’ applies here. When made with care and attention, these become truely profound wines. Here is a wonderful drop, that’s spent 4 months on fine lees supporting both the pear and white peach fruit characters, and a ripping fresh acidity. Wonderfully textural, the producer notes has ‘orange blossom, fresh grass and sea breeze’.

Jancis Robinson

Tastes like slices of ripe peach set into green sea glass. Tarragon, brine, carrying an almost pickleback-with-chopped-gherkin salty tang. A wine that tastes of sea- wind-meets-summer-peach-dripping-juice-down-my- elbows. Scrumptious with salted edamames in their pods. Superb entry level Rias Baixas and great value.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Granbazán is recognised as a 'best-in-class' producer that specialises exclusively in Albariño, bringing decades of focused expertise to this single varietal. Their maritime vineyards in Rías Baixas benefit from Atlantic Ocean influences, creating ideal conditions for Albariño's signature minerality and fresh acidity. The 4-month lees ageing process adds textural complexity while preserving the grape's natural vibrancy, resulting in a wine that perfectly expresses both the terroir and the producer's mastery.

Albariño's natural affinity with seafood stems from its coastal origins - the grape literally grows alongside Spain's Atlantic coastline where shellfish and fish are harvested daily. The wine's bright acidity cuts through rich sauces while its mineral backbone complements the briny flavours of the sea. This 2022 vintage's notes of sea breeze and citrus create a harmonious bridge between the wine and oceanic flavours, making it an ideal match for everything from oysters to grilled fish.

The 4-month fine lees contact transforms what could be a simple, crisp white into a more complex, textural experience. This process allows the wine to develop greater mouthfeel and depth while maintaining Albariño's characteristic freshness. The lees contribute to the wine's ability to support both the pear and white peach fruit characters mentioned, creating a more rounded palate that can handle richer dishes beyond just light seafood.

Unlike many crisp whites that focus purely on acidity and fruit, this textural style offers more weight and complexity on the palate. The combination of lees ageing and careful winemaking creates a wine with substance - you'll notice a slight creaminess and fuller mouthfeel that doesn't compromise the grape's natural freshness. This textural quality makes it more versatile with food pairings and gives the wine greater aging potential than simpler expressions of the variety.

Rías Baixas represents the pinnacle of Albariño production, with its unique combination of granite soils, Atlantic maritime climate, and centuries of winemaking tradition. The region's limited production and growing international recognition have created strong demand that often outstrips supply. This scarcity, combined with the wines' exceptional quality and food-friendly nature, has made authentic Rías Baixas Albariños like this Granbazán a prized find for wine enthusiasts worldwide.
