Year in and year out, this is amongst my favourite wines that I try. It's albariño, but better than you've ever known it. Fleshy, fierce, and fresh: you'll want to melt into every glass.

Why do we love this wine?

If you've been around for a while, you'll know that Granbazán are top tier when it comes to albariño producers. They dedicate their winery almost solely to the variety, and each level they produce just gets infinitely better. This albariño is from the best plots on the famous granite soils of the region and has spent 24 months ageing on fine lees. What does that mean? Think about the wines of Chablis, but then add a creamier, toasty note to offset the mineral and saline notes. Incredibly textural, all round stunning wine. Seriously, you'll thank us later for this one.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Granbazán albariño undergoes 24 months of lees ageing, which is exceptionally long for the variety and creates a remarkably textural wine with creamy, toasty notes. The extended lees contact transforms the typical crisp, mineral character of albariño into something more akin to premium white Burgundy, whilst maintaining the distinctive granite-driven minerality and saline qualities that make Rías Baixas wines so distinctive. This technique elevates it far beyond standard Spanish whites into serious fine wine territory.

The granite soils of Rías Baixas are fundamental to albariño's identity, imparting the distinctive mineral backbone and saline notes that define great examples of this variety. Granite's excellent drainage forces vines to develop deep root systems, concentrating flavours whilst the mineral composition directly influences the wine's texture and finish. This particular wine comes from the best granite plots in the region, which explains its exceptional mineral complexity and the way it balances richness from lees ageing with that characteristic stony precision.

The extended lees contact creates a fascinating interplay between richness and minerality, adding creamy, toasty notes that complement rather than mask the wine's natural apricot, honeysuckle and herbaceous characteristics. This technique, more commonly associated with premium Champagne and white Burgundy production, develops complex textural elements whilst the dead yeast cells contribute subtle nutty, brioche-like flavours. The result is a wine that maintains albariño's fresh acidity and mineral drive whilst gaining remarkable depth and sophistication.

The wine's enhanced texture and complexity from lees ageing makes it perfect for richer seafood dishes like lobster thermidor, pan-seared scallops, or creamy fish risottos where typical albariño might be overwhelmed. Its mineral backbone and herbaceous notes also complement roasted chicken with herbs, whilst the toasty, creamy elements pair beautifully with aged cheeses like Manchego or even light truffle dishes. The wine's medium body and textural richness bridge the gap between aperitif wines and those that can handle more substantial cuisine.

At four years old, this 2020 vintage is drinking beautifully now, with the lees ageing having integrated perfectly to create optimal balance between freshness and complexity. However, premium albariños from top producers like Granbazán can develop magnificently over 8-10 years, gaining honeyed notes and even greater textural sophistication whilst maintaining their mineral core. The wine's certified sustainable production and old vine fruit provide the structure needed for extended ageing, so you could cellar it for another 3-5 years if you prefer more developed, tertiary flavours.
