Why do we love this wine?

True leaders of the Australian wine industry. There is so much hype around the release of these wines, and the lofty standard has not only been met but exceeded with the 2023s. Beautiful piercing citrus fruits at the fore by way of nectarine, lemon, grapefruit and zesty lime. That focus fans out into some more generous tropical styling and creamy palate breadth. Some maritime sea-spray through the finish adds savoury complexity. This is another knock-out release from Giant Steps, long may they reign.

Wine Pilot

Wine Pilot

"Honeycrisp apple skin, lemon zest and green plum. Winter melon and starfruit. Plumes of talc powder, pomice and honeysuckle. Plenty of white delicate florals and a blush of nectarine. Intoxicating acidity and a kefir creaminess on the finish. A spray of saline and oak appears in its round shapes rather than toasty notes. Alive with energy and creeping unsuspecting power. Drinking well now and will cellar 3-5 years, a great wine for the bite of calamari or richness of abalone." 95pts, Wine Pilot

Frequently Asked Questions

Giant Steps has earned recognition as a Five Red Star Halliday Rated Winery and consistently ranks among Australia's Top 100 Wineries, reflecting their exceptional winemaking standards. Their Yarra Valley Chardonnay showcases the perfect balance between Old World elegance and New World fruit expression, with maritime influences adding distinctive savoury complexity that sets it apart from typical Australian Chardonnays. The wine demonstrates remarkable precision in its citrus-driven profile while maintaining the full-bodied richness that serious Chardonnay lovers seek.

The Yarra Valley's cool climate and diverse soils create ideal conditions for producing Chardonnay with both intensity and finesse. The region's proximity to Port Phillip Bay contributes maritime influences that manifest as the distinctive sea-spray character in this wine's finish, adding savoury complexity to the fruit-driven palate. This terroir allows the wine to develop piercing citrus clarity while maintaining full-bodied weight, creating a Chardonnay that expresses both the region's cool-climate precision and its capacity for producing wines with generous tropical styling.

The wine's full-bodied nature and creamy palate breadth make it an excellent match for rich seafood dishes like lobster thermidor or pan-seared scallops with butter sauce. The citrus-driven acidity and maritime finish complement oysters beautifully, while the tropical fruit elements pair wonderfully with roasted chicken or pork with stone fruit accompaniments. The wine's savoury complexity also makes it suitable for aged cheeses and dishes featuring herbs and cream-based sauces.

While this 2023 Chardonnay is drinking beautifully now with its vibrant citrus fruits and creamy texture perfectly integrated, it has the structure and complexity to reward careful cellaring. The wine's full-bodied nature and savoury maritime elements suggest it will develop additional layers of complexity over the next 3-5 years. Giant Steps' reputation for producing age-worthy Chardonnays means this wine will likely evolve from its current fruit-forward expression into something more nuanced and textural with time.

The creamy palate breadth likely results from traditional Burgundian winemaking techniques including malolactic fermentation and lees stirring, which add texture and complexity without overwhelming the wine's citrus-driven character. Giant Steps' approach balances oak influence carefully to enhance the wine's natural fruit expression while building the full-bodied structure that defines their style. The seamless integration of tropical fruit elements with maritime complexity suggests skilled barrel management and precise timing in the winemaking process.
