This is starting to show those nicely toasted secondary characters. Yet, the purity of the fruit has not been compromised. You sort of expect that from a good vintage. Plenty of flavour intensity with a splash of barrel fermented oak the final touch to a very nice wine. Rich and crunchy juicy palate is thoroughly

Frequently Asked Questions

Margaret River's maritime climate creates ideal conditions for SSB, with cool ocean breezes moderating temperatures and extending the growing season. The region's proximity to the Indian Ocean provides natural acidity retention while allowing full flavour development. This coastal influence is why Margaret River SSBs often display that distinctive mineral backbone alongside vibrant citrus characters, making them some of Australia's most food-friendly white wines.

The citrus provides the wine's fresh, zesty foundation typical of quality Sauvignon Blanc, while the honey notes suggest some barrel fermentation or lees contact that adds texture and complexity. The toast flavours indicate subtle oak influence, likely from French barrels, which bridges the gap between the wine's natural acidity and its richer, more developed characteristics. This combination creates a wine that's both refreshing and sophisticated.

Absolutely - quality Margaret River SSBs like this one are built for medium-term cellaring and often hit their stride around 4-6 years after vintage. The 2018 is now showing beautiful integration of its components, with the initial grassy Sauvignon Blanc notes evolving into more complex citrus and mineral characters. The Semillon component provides the backbone for this ageing potential, developing those characteristic honey and toast notes that make aged SSBs so rewarding.

A 90-point score from James Suckling places this wine in the 'Outstanding' category, indicating exceptional quality and complexity for its price point. Suckling is particularly respected for his assessment of Australian wines and tends to reward wines that show both regional typicity and winemaking excellence. This rating suggests the wine successfully captures Margaret River's signature style while demonstrating the craftsmanship that makes Fuddling Cup a 'Mofo Fave Producer'.

The wine's light body and citrus-honey-toast profile makes it incredibly versatile with seafood, particularly grilled fish, prawns, or oysters that echo Margaret River's coastal character. The toast notes complement dishes with subtle herb crusts or light cream sauces, while the citrus acidity cuts through richer preparations. Try it with goat's cheese salads, Asian-inspired seafood dishes, or even roast chicken - the wine's complexity means it won't be overwhelmed by moderately flavoured cuisine.
