El Enemigo has always been lauded for their exceptional chardonnay, generally considered one of the best in not only South America, but the entire world. Now they've started making chenin blanc and we're spellbound.

Why do we love this wine?

We've been huge fans of El Enemigo for years, especially their chardonnay. James Suckling has always felt the same way, often awarding it 97+ points. We're also lovers of chenin blanc, so we felt that the idea of El Enemigo making a chenin blanc was a potential match made in heaven. Once we had our first taste, we knew this to be true. The fruit is sourced from 50 year old vines (who knew there were chenin vines that old in Mendoza!!!), pressed in whole clusters and then bottled unfined and unfiltered. We're talking texture for days, minerality, almond meal, cured lemon and a mouthwatering underscore of subtle salinity. It often takes a producer years to nail a new variety, but El Enemigo has done it in their first go round. Lucky us!

Attractively briny nose with some cooked lemons, hot stone minerals, yeast, juniper and a hint of bread crust and almonds. Full-bodied yet bright and slightly phenolic on the palate with excellent freshness and power. Transparent, dry and saline in the finish. Delicious and super drinkable. Drink or hold.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine comes from incredibly rare 50-year-old chenin blanc vines in Mendoza - a remarkable find given chenin's limited presence in Argentina. The whole cluster pressing and unfiltered bottling creates extraordinary texture and complexity that's unusual for the variety. El Enemigo has achieved something remarkable by nailing this challenging variety on their first attempt, earning 95 points from James Suckling.

The whole cluster pressing technique preserves more phenolic compounds from the grape skins, contributing to the wine's distinctive textural weight and mineral backbone. Being bottled unfined and unfiltered means all the natural flavour compounds remain intact, creating layers of almond meal, cured lemon, and subtle salinity. This approach is more common in premium Burgundy production but creates stunning results with chenin blanc.

Chenin blanc is traditionally associated with France's Loire Valley and South Africa, making its presence in Argentina's high-altitude Mendoza region quite rare. The discovery of 50-year-old vines suggests early pioneering plantings that have adapted beautifully to the terroir. Mendoza's diurnal temperature variation and mineral soils provide ideal conditions for chenin blanc to develop both richness and refreshing acidity.

The wine's medium body and mineral-driven profile make it perfect for seafood with rich sauces, roasted chicken, or creamy pasta dishes. The almond meal notes complement dishes with nuts or herbs, while the subtle salinity pairs beautifully with oysters or aged cheeses. The textural weight means it can handle more substantial dishes than typical crisp white wines.

The 95 points from James Suckling and 93 points from Tim Atkin MW represent exceptional scores for a debut chenin blanc, particularly impressive given both critics' expertise with premium white wines. These ratings place it among the world's finest chenin blancs, competing with top Loire Valley and South African examples. Such recognition validates El Enemigo's reputation for excellence beyond their acclaimed chardonnays.
