Marillier have coaxed something genuinely impressive out of higher-sloping vineyards in the Chablis appellation - a wine that punches well above its designation and, frankly, outperforms many bottles labelled simply "Chablis" at twice the price. Unoaked, stainless steel vinified and completely alive with the kind of steely, saline minerality that makes this corner of Burgundy so uniquely compelling.

Why do we love this wine?

Crisp orchard fruit, green apple, a squeeze of citrus and that unmistakable oyster shell quality on the nose. The palate is fresh and focused, with an attractive creaminess through the mid-palate that gives it texture and weight without ever sacrificing the wine's natural brightness and drive. This is classic Chablis character - cool, precise and completely refreshing - at a price that makes it an absolute no-brainer. Oysters, seafood, a good soft cheese or just a warm afternoon with nowhere particular to be. All excellent options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Petit Chablis comes from vineyards on the outer edges of the Chablis appellation, typically on different soil types than the famous Kimmeridgian clay. While it shares Chablis's signature minerality and crisp character, Petit Chablis tends to be more approachable in youth and offers excellent value. This 2024 vintage showcases the classic flinty minerality alongside fresh apple and citrus notes that define the region's style.

This full-bodied profile suggests Domaine Marillier has crafted their Petit Chablis with techniques that enhance texture and weight, possibly through extended lees contact or partial malolactic fermentation. While Chablis is traditionally known for its lean, mineral-driven style, skilled producers can create richer expressions that maintain the region's characteristic flinty backbone. The result is a wine that bridges the gap between crisp minerality and satisfying palate presence.

The combination of full body, apple and citrus flavours, and flinty minerality makes this wine particularly suited to seafood with rich sauces, roasted chicken, or creamy pasta dishes. The mineral backbone cuts through butter and cream-based preparations, while the fuller weight can stand up to more substantial proteins. Classic pairings include oysters, grilled fish, or even soft cheeses where the wine's acidity provides perfect balance.

Serve this Petit Chablis well-chilled at 8-10°C to highlight its crisp acidity and mineral character. As a 2024 vintage, it's designed for near-term enjoyment while the fruit flavours are vibrant and fresh. Store bottles on their side in a cool, dark place, and while it can be enjoyed now, it may develop additional complexity over the next 2-3 years as the flinty minerality becomes more pronounced.

Domaine Marillier Père et Fils represents the traditional family winemaking approach that defines much of Burgundy, where knowledge and vineyard sites are passed down through generations. The 'Père et Fils' (Father and Sons) designation indicates a multi-generational operation, typically bringing together traditional techniques with modern precision. Their ability to produce a full-bodied Petit Chablis while maintaining the appellation's characteristic flinty minerality demonstrates skilled winemaking that respects both terroir and house style.
