Why do we love this wine?

Complex and textural riesling from the Apple Isle. This small-scale passion project of Tassie icon Derwent Estate is brand new to the ‘Fo. Safe to say, we’re stoked to get our hands on it. Juicy, pithy lime gives depth and breadth to the palate, and developed whole lemon drives the fruit profile. A musky, petroleum nuance reveals itself in the glass. We won’t judge you if instant gratification is your thing, but this beauty will keep developing in complexity for years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Deviance Riesling showcases Tasmania's unique cool-climate terroir, producing a more textural and complex style than mainland Australian Rieslings. The petroleum nuance and musky character are classic hallmarks of premium Riesling that develops with bottle age. Tasmania's latitude and maritime influence create ideal conditions for Riesling's signature acidity and mineral complexity.

The petroleum or petrol character in aged Riesling is actually a sign of quality and proper development. This distinctive aroma comes from compounds called TDN (trimethyl-dihydronaphthalene) that form as the wine matures. It's particularly prized in premium Rieslings from cool climates like Tasmania, indicating the wine has the structure and acidity to age gracefully.

Given its textural complexity and developed character already showing at four years old, this Deviance Riesling has excellent cellaring potential. Premium cool-climate Rieslings like this can evolve beautifully for 10-15 years, developing honeyed notes and deeper mineral complexity. The lime and lemon fruit will integrate further while maintaining the wine's signature acidity.

The textural weight and citrus-driven profile make this ideal with fresh seafood, particularly Tasmanian salmon or scallops. The musky complexity pairs beautifully with Asian cuisine, especially Thai or Vietnamese dishes with herbs and spice. The wine's acidity also cuts through rich, creamy sauces while complementing the natural sweetness in shellfish.

Small-scale production typically means greater attention to detail in vineyard management and winemaking, often resulting in more distinctive, terroir-driven wines. Derwent Estate's passion project approach suggests hand-selected fruit and careful winemaking techniques that larger commercial operations can't always achieve. This focused approach often produces wines with more personality and complexity, explaining the wine's boutique producer recognition.
