Arneis! Unsung but never under-done. Arneis is a varietal we should be paying more attention too, and when you tuck into this you'll see why.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Arneis is so well suited to the Australian palate, it's a pity we don't see more of it. This is peachy, honeyed, nutty, and with a softer, broader acidity that provides freshness but doesn't overwhelm the wine. This is medium bodied pushing into full; there is distinct fruit weight that is satisfying on the palate. The appeal of arneis, for me, is it's ability to slip into any moment, sit with any meal, and please any punter - it is a tried and true crowd pleaser, and we love it for that.

Frequently Asked Questions

Arneis naturally complements the Australian palate with its balanced acidity that provides freshness without being overpowering. Unlike some white wines that can be too sharp or acidic, this variety offers a softer, broader acidity profile that makes it incredibly food-friendly. Its medium to full-bodied nature with distinct fruit weight means it can stand up to a variety of dishes while remaining approachable for casual drinking occasions.

The peachy and honeyed notes in this Arneis come from the grape's natural tendency to develop stone fruit flavours as it ripens, particularly in warmer climates like Great Southern. These characteristics are enhanced by the wine's medium-bodied structure, which allows the fruit flavours to express themselves fully without being masked by excessive acidity. The nutty undertones add complexity and suggest some lees contact during winemaking, which contributes to the wine's satisfying palate weight.

Great Southern's cool climate and diverse soil types create perfect conditions for Arneis to maintain its characteristic balance of fruit intensity and natural acidity. The region's temperature variations between day and night help preserve the grape's delicate aromatics while allowing sufficient ripening for the peachy, honeyed flavours to develop. This climate also prevents the wine from becoming too heavy or losing the fresh qualities that make Arneis so appealing to modern wine drinkers.

A Five Red Star rating from James Halliday represents the highest tier of Australian winery recognition, indicating exceptional quality and consistency across the producer's range. For Paul Nelson, this rating reflects their mastery of winemaking techniques and their ability to express terroir effectively. The 90-point score for this specific Arneis demonstrates that even their varietal wines meet premium standards, suggesting meticulous attention to vineyard management and winemaking practices.

Serve this Arneis well-chilled at around 8-10°C to highlight its fresh, juicy character while allowing the peachy and honeyed notes to shine through. Its versatile nature means it pairs beautifully with everything from seafood and white meats to creamy pasta dishes and soft cheeses. The wine's medium body and balanced acidity make it perfect for both casual gatherings and more formal dining, living up to its reputation as a reliable crowd-pleaser that adapts to any occasion.
