Why do we love this wine?

Lime splice, lemon curd and nectarine on the nose tells you we're somewhere in or around the Yarra. A juicy palate of rockmelon, pink grapefruit and just enough of that buttery, toasty, oaky richness. A little saline twang keeps things fresh, while the creamy mouthfeel adds just the right touch of indulgence. Barrel-fermented, mostly through malo, and aged in French oak, this is layered, textural, and ridiculously well made for the price. If you're unsure where your chardy loyalties lie - big and buttery or lean and racy - this sits perfectly in the middle. Elegant, balanced, and damn delicious.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Chardonnay strikes a perfect balance between the two dominant Australian Chardonnay styles. While it undergoes barrel fermentation and malolactic conversion in French oak for that creamy, buttery richness, it maintains freshness through a saline mineral backbone. This approach reflects modern Australian winemaking philosophy where producers seek elegance over extremes, creating wines that appeal to both traditionalists who love oak and modernists who prefer crisp acidity.

The Yarra Valley's cool climate and diverse soil types create perfect conditions for balanced Chardonnay production. The region's elevation and maritime influence allow grapes to ripen slowly while retaining natural acidity, evident in this wine's lime and grapefruit notes. The valley's reputation for producing both powerful and elegant Chardonnays stems from its ability to develop complex fruit flavours while maintaining the mineral backbone that keeps wines fresh and food-friendly.

Malolactic fermentation converts sharp malic acid into softer lactic acid, creating the wine's creamy mouthfeel and buttery characteristics. By doing this 'mostly' rather than completely, the winemaker preserves some of the original grape acidity, maintaining that fresh saline twang mentioned in the tasting notes. This partial malo technique is increasingly popular among premium producers as it adds complexity without sacrificing the bright fruit character that makes Chardonnay so versatile with food.

French oak imparts more subtle, integrated flavours compared to American oak's bold vanilla and coconut notes. In this Chardonnay, French oak contributes to the wine's textural complexity and layered character without overwhelming the delicate lime, nectarine and rockmelon fruit flavours. The oak provides structure and that gentle toasty richness while allowing the Yarra Valley's distinctive mineral character to shine through, creating a more sophisticated and food-friendly wine.

This medium-bodied Chardonnay's creamy texture and balanced acidity make it exceptionally versatile with food. The saline mineral backbone pairs beautifully with fresh seafood like oysters or grilled fish, while the buttery oak richness complements roasted chicken or pork. The wine's grapefruit and peach notes also work wonderfully with Asian cuisine, particularly dishes with subtle spice or coconut-based sauces, where the wine's texture can stand up to rich flavours without being overwhelmed.
